Yeah that sounds a little like him, this guys just old school and is really strict. People asked him to say some words in irish as you do and he was saying three and tree and all that crap then someone asked him to say 'Potato' like the Keith Lemon show and we got a rant on the famine and how that is certainly not funny. Is it just me that thinks he went completely overboard with it or would you legitimately find that offensive if I asked that?

I think he went overboard, but older folks seem to be a bit more sensitive about these things. If a person was just joking with me light-heartedly about it then it wouldn't bother me at all, although I'd probably underwhelm people saying with my boring flat midlands accent. If a person made a joke about it in more serious tones then we've got issues.

It's probably the same with any kind of sensitive issue. it depends what you say and in what tone or context. Most of the Irish people I know make jokes about it around each other and welcome jokes from others too, but I can imagine its easy to make one particularly bad joke in bad taste to change the mood a little.

How old is he? That wil probably explain why he is so sensitive to those remarks. He probably grow up around the time there was a lot of anti-irishness in Britain.

Youtube, go kill yourself. I wasn't a massive fan of your old layout but at least it still made some sense to me. Who the hell are you hiring to design your websites, five year olds? This is one of the worst pieces of professional design I've seen in a while and it's come from one of the richest companies in the world.

Glad I'm not the only one who hates the new layout.

I know. It's bad on my home monitor, which is a 25" widescreen. All the content is left-justified and I have to scoot my chair over to see a video straight on.
I think it's part of this big move for sites to start formatting their layouts to cater to tablet/pad devices. Unfortunately, for those of us with actual computers.

I guess when those things start coming out with 25" screens, we'll start to see normal websites again.

I really don't get why they just can't make a separate tablet layout site then, like they've done for mobiles for goodness knows how long. Even if they did get rid of that horrible blank space that takes up about 60% of my screen, it doesn't excuse some of the other crap they've added. Why are recommended videos back in your subscription feed again? The last time they did that they had to stop it after a few days because so many people hated it, and with good reason. It's just a terrible idea and it won't magically work if they keep doing it.

No the actual site it terrible on the iPad as well. Thankfully they haven't wrecked the mobile app yet.

In other news, my aunt died yesterday after a brief, acute illness that caused a hemorrhage in her brain. She slipped into a coma after being admitted to hospital. Her kids were by her side when they took her off life support, and some of her organs were harvested for donation. I am glad that some people are able to live because of her. She just turned 56 on Tuesday .

My dad was very close to her as he is only a year older. She lived out in Vancouver so if there is a funeral service or something like that, my dad will fly out there. His other sister in Los Angeles would also fly out for a service. My cousins are all grown - there are three of them, all in their early 30's. They are taking it really hard of course, but are handling everything that has to be done really well.

The rest of the extended family is still in New Zealand, but they know and have sent their condolences. We got Facebook to memorialize/archive her profile, and set it so that friends and family can still post condolences and memories and photos.

It's been a really difficult couple of years for the family - my grandmother died in February 2011 and my dad is still reeling from that.

For whatever reason he would sometimes come into class as the crankiest man in the world and kick people out of class for any little reason at all. I was flabbergasted, I'm guessing he wasn't a morning person. Any other time when we had him in the afternoon he was the nicest man you'd meet.

Yeah, even the nicest teachers/lecturers can have their nasty side.
I remember back in military school, my senoir English teacher was a chaplin. One day, he mentioned how one of his students had offered him a corvette to pass the kid, and that he'd turned it down. Then all the kids in class started coming up with things to bribe him with and were asking him in class, and of course he'd say "No". Real light hearted and chill. So, I was trying to think of something good, because just saying "A house" or "A million" dollars is just boring. So, for some dumbass reason, I got into my head to ask him, "What if I gave you Jesus?" He was smiling before, and then his face just dropped, and he stared at me for a few seconds. Then, he said, in a very quiet voice, "I'm going to pretend that I didn't hear that", while I tried to sit as low in my chair as possible. I failed that class.
