A bad fuel pump will be intermittent like you described. The real question: Is the fuel pump in the gas tank or is it located in a convenient spot close to it, like a Nissan Sentra (under the back seat). If it's the former, it's gonna be pricey.

Either way, hope you get it worked out. Public transit sucks. I heard a story this morning about a guy whacking people with a bag of frozen chicken on bus.
