How about, f**k you newbies!

Here's an interesting fact, these are people who joined in January and decided to make an intro thread:

MD23 - lasted 1 day, made 16 posts
topsy_kretts - lasted 1 day, made 2 posts
WhiteStripesTenaciousD1 - lasted 1 day, made 0 posts
savannah - made 125 posts, lasted over a month and is a live and kicking
dert_stylus - lasted 13 days, made 14 posts
ILoveMyiPod - lasted 1 day, made 0 posts
IheartB5and2MUCH - lasted 1 day, made 1 post
Return.To.Sender - lasted 1 day, made 8 posts
mrbagel3 - lasted 2 days, made 11 posts
tobiran - lasted 2 days, made 7 posts
pinkfloyd - lasted 1 day, made 0 posts
lawdy_missclawdy - lasted 1 day, made 0 posts
ItalianStallion - lasted 7 days, made 11 posts
Lizzie - made 367 posts, lasted over a month and is alive and kicking
ghostonstage135 - made 48 posts, lasted a month and a half

Dirtnap - lasted 1 day, made 2 posts
Joseph - lasted 20 days, made 10 posts
Mortimer - lasted 1 day, made 3 posts
Bug - lasted 2 days, made 6 posts
Mishramtg - lasted 2 days, made 9 posts
antihero496 - lasted, 7 days, made 15 posts

As you can see, only 3 people out of 21 have stayed a wile longer and have some prospect of becoming a regular member. I'm guessing the statistic for other months isn't much better. My question is, why do people bother making intro threads if they have no intention of staying for a while? I don't think I ever made one and I've lasted for almost 3 years now. Why is the first thing you do when you get to a forum making a thread and introducing yourself? The first thing I did was search for my favorite bands (at the time) and say something about them. 4 people out of 21 didn't make a single post outside the introductions area! Can you believe that shit??

Anyways, this has been bothering me for a while now, mainly because I'm tired of not only spending my own time trying to welcome these people under the assumption that they're here to stay (because why else would you go through the trouble of making a goddamn introduction thread?!), but of seeing others waste their time going through the motions.

Anyone else feeling my pain?

right-track 02-17-2008 09:43 AM

It's a numbers game Marijan.
Most don't stay and will be less likely to stay if they don't get a warm welcome.
3 people out of 21 aint bad...1 in 7.

adidasss 02-17-2008 10:10 AM

So it doesn't bother you at all?:\

Bane of your existence 02-17-2008 10:28 AM

Well the forums pretty dope for a minute, then you realize that nothing changes. I still thumb through old threads every now and again to get ideas on what I want to listen to. I have to wade through pages of the same repetitive stuff for pages before I find any gems.

Not trying to be insulting, just offering my opinion.

Also, the no cussing thing is annoying.

swim 02-17-2008 10:41 AM

fuck fu-ck f00k
it's not that annoying

This doesn't have anything to do with the thread, but I see your point. The forum never really changes. Same old people, the board has the same overall leanings in their taste.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-17-2008 11:18 AM

If people actually contributed rather than getting involved in petty arguments you wouldn't have to wade through loads of repetitive crap.

If the forum seems the same then it's because it's always the same handful of people going to the effort of doing things all the time.

This forum is what YOU make it.

tkpb938 02-17-2008 11:36 AM

Well I'm still around and I never made an intro thread. :)

I'll probably have periods of inactivity, but I'll still come back for periods of activity as well. So ya... Don't delete my account if I don't show up for a couple weeks!

Lizzie 02-17-2008 12:01 PM

Don't worry, I'll stick around, I promise

GuitarBizarre 02-17-2008 12:12 PM

What I find more disturbing is that you actually cared enough to take the time and go through each members profile to find that out...

Not got much to do?

Nah, because I don't expect everyone who makes an intro to stick around as long as the regular members do.
That would be insanely unfair to expect.

What does bother me more are the ones that read these boards regularly, but never create an account.
I'd rather see them join the community.
And when they make an intro, they should be made to feel welcome.
I also think the regular posters are very slowly growing in number.
About twelve months ago the average for peak times was around the 20's and now it's more into the 30's.

lucylamppost 02-17-2008 12:13 PM

what ever happen to Mockingbird

right-track 02-17-2008 12:14 PM

killed? :/

GuitarBizarre 02-17-2008 12:15 PM

That was a terrible joke...

ProggyMan 02-17-2008 12:16 PM

I've noticed an influx of modern rock fans and 'indie kids' lately. Kinda' annoying.

Its ok, father GB will forgive you.

After all, I spent 45 minutes making awful puns with my family today, trying to pun on the names of spices and herbs of all things. I think you're pretty tame compared.

Bottom line is, if you're not sure if you're gonna like the place, don't make a fucking thread...post, see if you dig it, then get the fuck out if you don't...that way, I won't be bothered by your presence. I mean, this is like walking up to someone in a bar, introducing yourself and then walking away. NUTS!! NUTS I TELL YOU!!

(UH) has said all one needs to know about MB & all other music site forum's period. (I dont kiss ass) I tell it the way it is, use your common sense. I have visited alot of other music forums & still do from time to time. And I can tell you, nothing is ever perfect. But MusicBanter is the best of the best! And you/we, have the right to leave any time we wish to, Its your loss, Not MBs. Chill..& dont be afraid to ask the Mods for input on a problem that you are having with the MB forum or for that matter, other music forums also. I am sure they would be more than happy to help. We are all here for the same reason's. Our love for music. If only we could all see & understand that reality. These guys have seen & been through it all here at MusicBanter before with other members. Peace.

Thats nothing, before I got banned from the Megadeth forums, I had 15K. That was after 2.5/3 years.

adidasss 02-17-2008 12:52 PM

And you call me disturbed.... ;)

GuitarBizarre 02-17-2008 01:01 PM

heh. I was a lot more a nutball on that forum that I am here.

pheurton 02-17-2008 01:50 PM

tbh you've probably banned about half of them

ghostonstage135 02-17-2008 11:26 PM

If it wasn't for MB I wouldn't listen to real, good screamo.

Thanks MB! :thumb:

Seltzer 02-18-2008 12:27 AM

Well it doesn't really bother me if someone makes an intro thread and never returns. But I do wish that more members would stick around and become regulars.

adidasss 02-18-2008 01:57 AM

Ok, you people are even crazier than those nut jobs...:|

sleepy jack 02-18-2008 02:38 AM

I'm with you on this Marijan, I got your back always.

.Tom. 02-18-2008 06:24 AM

If it's any assurance, I'm new and so far haven't had any problems with anyone - I think when it comes to music forums, the temptation sometimes is to read something bad about something you like and decide you don't want to bother because of that. Music forums can be full of flaming a lot of the time when people can't accept opinions, I guess. I was hesitant to join here, but after reading through some threads it seemed like a healthy community with little drama.

lucylamppost 02-18-2008 09:51 PM

I think most people just join to find one thing out or to ask if anyone knows the name of a song they are looking for.

Farfisa 02-18-2008 11:12 PM

I've actually been here for only 15 days and I've made 136 posts......and plan to stick around....

Predator 02-18-2008 11:47 PM

Well fuck all you newbies, even if you stayed.

If it weren't for MB, I don't think I would have never ever of heard of the Magnetic Fields, and they are like my favorite band right now, so I'm quite glad I joined

Damn it, I was hoping nobody would notice.

I think more newbies should do what I did. Join and post for a few weeks, then disappear for a few months and come back. It leaves you with a sense of newness.
Or you could be like the guy above me and get banned for a few months, then have the mods suffer from a momentary lack of sanity and let you come back.

littleknowitall 02-19-2008 02:50 PM

Just make it so in order to post a thread, including an introduction you have to make 30 odd posts (just an estimate) and prove your sticking around....that way if you are comfortable here you can finally introduce yourself formally.

adidasss 02-19-2008 05:03 PM

OMFG that's brilliant!! Mods!!http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ower/judge.gif
