South Chicago I believe. My aunt and uncle live there and they sounds fine to me...but they are from the city.

I have an odd accent because I've grown up in North Carolina but my dad was an Army brat and my mom's from Wisconsin.

Does Ann Arbor count as southeast Michigan? I have a good friend from there and she has a very strong accent that sounds the same to me as a Detroit accent.

Yes. Especially people from the south side. The north side has more people who move there from elsewhere (like I did several years ago) so the accent isn't as distinct.

This interview with Dennis Farina is a pretty good example of a Chicago accent:

Ann Arbor is more mid-michigan but its close enough to Detroit that the accent could be picked up easily. I'm really going to start listening to my friends now to try and pick up on a hint of an accent.

Are you even able to do that? Like listen to "your kind"(and I mean that in the most innocent way possibly) of people and pick up an accent that you, yourself, have?

Sure. And when you're from a place you can probably pick up nuances that someone who isn't from there would never even notice, like the difference between a Detroit accent and Ann Arbor accent or something. I know with my home state of Massachusetts I'm usually able to tell the difference in accent between north shore and south shore accents, but I doubt the difference is as noticeable to someone who isn't from there.

lol, especially me! I cant tell the difference sometimes between Australia and England.

I'm horrible with recognizing and imitating accents.

I think I just don't notice most of the time, I focus more on the actual language, analyzing it in my head, and keeping my nerves down because of my social anxiety. lol.
