Actually, I'm in the same boat. But Les Paul better be in this list. That guy is the single most important person in the history of music, bar none. He's literally more important than Mozart as far as I'm concerned, because he's singlehandedly responsible for the modern recording studio.

Anything ever recorded with more than one microphone and more than one take layered over the others, is a direct result of Les Paul. Without him, we'd still be recording music with absolutely ZERO option but to have the whole band in one cramped room, with the final sound determined by that, no option to mix, master, overdub, or do alternate takes.

And thats without getting into the fact he's the father of the electric guitar. (His "Log" prototypes were significantly earlier than Leo Fender's earliest prototypes. 1940, in fact, whereas fender released the first telecaster/broadcaster in 1951)

Thats were I disagree. He is the most important person undoubtedly when it comes to recording. Leo Fender is the one responsible for bringing the PA, high powered amp, and setting the standard for bass and guitar. Les Pauls log was NOTHING like a les paul as we know it today. Nearly every high gain amp today is pretty much an advanced take on early Marshall amplifiers. Where did those come from? As you well know the first Marshalls were simply altered Fender Bassman amps.

Completely agree. He was a genius and is almost single handedly responsible for the modern day recording studio.

Id say he is maybe the prince of electric guitar. Sure he created the first solid body. First off it didnt go into production for nearly 10 years and secondly it in the beginning was NOTHING like the Les Paul standard we know today. Leo created the most customizable instrument in which you could produce for less than half the cost and part out to make yourself a custom. And not to mention thats just the beginning. Sure LP created the Les Paul but he didnt create nearly the insane amount of designs leo continued to put out during the years. Ask 10 people off the street to draw a guitar, what will they do.....a picture of a strat.

Not to mention ALL modern music that has even the slightest bit of volume neccisery has Leo to thank. Every bass player in history has owned a Jazz and Precision bass. Every singer has used a PA. Hell he is even the father of the tremelo. Paul Bigsby had an outdated design and Leo Fender knew it.

Leo wouldn't have done any of those things had he not talked to Les Paul and seen his "Log". I've just finished a presentation for my degree on the technical development of the electric guitar, and I can assure you, the facts are that without Les Paul, there wouldn't be one. At all. The closest anyone got before him or without him., was the ES-150 and the Lloyd Loar Vivitone

I dont disagree with that. But the sheer amount of innovation Leo brought after that is astounding. Its like Henry Ford, the guy didnt invent the automobile but he is the reason we all have them today.
