I should take the Fast Ferry over and visit!

Didn't they cancel that ferry though? Or am I thinking of a different one? All I know is that we have a really nice ferry terminal here with no more ferries to Rochester

Grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, around Berkeley.

Went to college near Sacramento, at Davis.

I'm 24 now and just moved to Eugene, Oregon.

Haha yeah the ferry comment was sarcastic. It's gone since like 2009 and our ferry terminal is nothing but a few restaurants now. Nice restaurants though, a sushi place and Cheeburger Cheeburger.

Never really noticed how close NY and Canada are. Wow.

Gainesville, FL. Punk rock capital of the Southeast!

Salami 05-28-2012 12:10 PM

I live in Derbyshire, which is in northern England.
I'm uploading a few pics for your enjoyment:

That is the view of the fields behind us on a very beautiful morning last October.

http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/...i/DSCN2839.jpg

This is a pic I took at the bottom of a valley called Grindsbrook Clough, which is a good morning's climb to get to the top!

http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/...i/DSCN2877.jpg

And that's the view from the top of the valley - behind me is the mountain Kinder Scout.

On a clear day, there are some spots in New York where you can look across Lake Ontario and see Toronto on the other side.

Well, New York State at least. I can drive down to the border in less than 3 hours, in Niagara Falls. Waiting in line at customs is a whole other issue though

90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the border, apparently.

New York City is only an 8 or 9 hour drive from here. But I've never been there as it's quite an expensive trip!

Yeah, the CN Tower and probably some other buildings I'm guessing. I believe from the tower's lookout you can see Rochester and sometimes as far as Buffalo on a clear day, but on land you can't see across the lake. No buildings at least.

Paedantic Basterd 05-28-2012 03:10 PM

I live 12 minutes from the border. Seems like a legit statistic.

This is from Youngstown, NY. Obviously zoomed in, but it's what you can see on a clear day.

I probably would too if there wasn't this gross, over-polluted body of water in the way. Okay, it's not as bad now, but it's still gross. All I ever see in there is dead fish and seagulls pecking at them.

How cool! The only real experience I've had with seeing another city across the border was when I was in Windsor, ON, looking across the (not very wide) river to Detroit. But they're so close to each other - Windsor is practically a suburb of Detroit

Wow, that's quite impressive!

I took a picture of the city of Liverpool from where I live on a clear day, and I don't know how much of a difference in distance we're talking about, but the haze due to Manchester's urban area makes it very difficult to see anything through my long range lense:

Interesting you mention that, it's filmed in the town of Holmfirth which is about fifteen miles northeast of me!

I don't know them personally but by odd coincidence I did see them play locally at a bike shop/co-op a year and a half ago, and wrote up the performances that night for my magazine column.

Even though I'm not into metal at all any more I really enjoyed their set.

Haha!
To be fair, a lot of films are shot in these part, "Pride and Prejudice" was filmed in Lyme Park, which is even closer to me, and "The Princess Bride" was shot mainly in Derbyshire as well.

However they empty the bins only once a fortnight... lousy council.

That yellow field looks awesome. There hasn't been one of those around here in ages. Just boring crops. :( I'm going out to take photos of this place at its finest. Absolutely ****ing miserable.

This is my house http://www.trollheart.com/ddale1.jpg
though at the moment we've given the floating gigantic finger the week off. Can be quite off-putting, having that hover above your house all the time! Deters burgulars though! Well, sometimes attracts them. Not what you'd call a safe house, by any means! :D

The house is situated in Darndale, a less-than-beautiful-but-not-crappy housing estate just outside of Coolock, which will mean nothing to you non-Irish people. It's a council estate, though not in bad shape. I've lived here for over 40 years, since Darndale was built. Neither the van nor the car are mine; I don't drive. It's also a little annoying trying to get past those big white lines GoogleMaps put in: wish they'd just move them! :)

The room Mister Finger is pointing to is where my sis has lived, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the last five or so years, restricted as she is to the upstairs of our house due to her MS. They're finally building her a downstairs extension in the garden, so hopefully in a month or so she can at last leave her prison.

I can truthfully say that's the first moment this year MB has made me laugh out loud...
I suppose the good part is though that despite this you're still on the edge of Dubin and very near the sea.
Sorry about your sister, I hope that extension sorted out as soon as they can manage.

Tennessee. I grew up on a farm. My first real friend was a horse, and I spent my summer vacation plowing fields or feeding chickens and goats. And I loved every moment of it.
