The Roller Coasters/Thrill Rides Thread

I didn't find any such thread on this forum so I thought I'd make one.

One of the best possible experiances in life is riding a thrill ride. I rode my first roller coaster at the age of 8. It wasn't much of a roller coaster, it felt a lot more like a sled attached to a steel track, but nevertheless it put a love of thrill rides in me at a young age. Six years later I have ridden every single roller coaster at Canada's Wonderland and a number of the more intense rides.

Some of my favorite attractions:

Behemoth:

I've only ever been to Playland in Vancouver, theme parks aren't really my thing. That coaster isn't really that scary, the only thing that's scary about it is it's a wooden roller coaster in the Pacific Northwest so the wood is just saturated with water and there's this unnerving feeling you get as you reach the top that it's going to collapse.

Alfred 05-13-2009 06:51 PM

That actually looks like a pretty good roller coaster. How many roller coasters are there at that park?

LoathsomePete 05-13-2009 07:03 PM

4, there's that one, the Corkscrew, the Dragon, and the Wild Mouse. The corkscrew is the biggest disappointment of them all, from the look of it upon first glance you think it's going to be a pretty fun and exciting ride, but somehow they managed to make it bland and boring. The Wild Mouse is a pretty tall ride with a few steep drops but the scariest thing is the sharp corners, which at times you feel like your cart is going off the track. My favorite is the Dragon ride, it's essentially the little kids roller coaster but I think is the most enjoyable for what it is, it goes fast, has a decent steep drop, and does more than 1 lap.

I could never get into the rollercoaster thing. Feeling like I'm about to die isn't a good rush for me.
Anyone else like that?

i've gone only on the coaster and corkscrew in terms of roller coasters. not much of a ride person, but i agree, the corkscrew was weak... way tamer than i thought it would be.

Never had a problem with that. The whole spending two hours in line for a thirty second ride thing, however, is a pretty big turnoff for me.

Alfred 05-13-2009 07:43 PM

Canada's Wonderland has one of those "wild mouse" type rollercoasters called The Fly. I could never get excited about it other than the first drop.

you only see that with the super-huge attractions that boast some crazy draw.

i've been to a few parks, Cedar Point was one of the most fun, but my favorite ride has to be the X-Flight of Geauga Lake:

http://www.geaugalaketoday.com/Rolle...light%2016.jpg

apparently the coaster has since moved locations but this was the unusual 'Flying Dutchman' design which only a few coasters around the world boast. you go up on your back on the incline and flip over onto your stomach for the majority of the ride. really exciting.

Alfred 05-13-2009 08:10 PM

^That ride looks amazing. They had something like that on Roller Coaster Tycoon (that game is awesome).

So I'm going to Canada's Wonderland with the school band in a week. I'm really really excited. We have to go to the pavillion for maybe an hour to perform but we have 10 AM till 6 PM at the park so most of the day will be spent screaming my lungs out with my friends.

I could live at King's Island. Flight Of Fear, Firehawk & The Vortex are my favorites.

the firehawk is insane, you're going at it head first the entire time.

pretty sure that's the old X-Flight. sweet fecking ride.

haven't been to King's Island but it looks cool.

Thrice 05-14-2009 09:54 AM

Sweet thread.

I find that coasters are alot of the same at every park, with a few exceptions, and being from FL and all I love the water rides.

BOMBAY
You go inside a bomb like capsule and then it starts to countdown from 3, at 1 the floor opens and you drop down onto a slide, its pretty old, but still scary as ever.
http://www.buckeyepalace.com/DAVH/TI...Bay%20copy.gif

Storm
In this one, you start out going down a tube, there are thunder and lightning effects, suddenly you come out onto a funnel which is pretty much the greatest thing ever. You swirl around 4-5 times before dropping into a typhoon like pool. There is fog everywhere and rain pouring down. They have an employee yell for you to guide you out because you cant really see or hear over the thunder.

The Tower Of Terror
http://www.themeparkreview.com/dca2004_2/dca20.jpg
Its an elevator where you sit down in it and it takes you through like the twilight zone for a minute or two than you get into a dark room and it says something like "you are now about to witness the twlight zone or something" than it just drops you. its like 13 stories high. and than it brings you back up half way, drops you again, than takes you up all the way again and drops you again. its an amazing ride. you can feel yourself lift out of your seat as your dropping but you do have seat belts so your head doesnt completely crush on the ceeling.

pahuuuta 05-14-2009 12:20 PM

Space Mountain (In Orlando, Florida)
http://www.ultimateorlando.com/extin.../spaceout2.jpg
This is probably my favorite ride that i have ever been on its nothing special it doesnt go upside down or anything but its like your in space and there are like stars and different effects you see like meteors go by and stuff its really cool just to watch.

http://www.ultimateorlando.com/extin...ace/Paul17.jpg
this is the tunnel your in right before you get to all the cool effects that the ride has. Its so dark in there that you cant see anything else once you get into the area

so unfortunately i have no pictures or cant find any either of what it looks like so i guess you have to go to orlando and find out for yourself.

I've been to King's Island a couple times...the Vortex is wild...love it! I also used to like that wooden roller coaster the Beast...do they still have that one? It's been about 18 years since I've been there.

As for me, I'm a huge roller coaster enthusiast. Can't get enough of 'em! I especially like the rides that drop you from so many hundred feet in the air. There was one at Fiesta Texas in San Antonio that for the life of me I can't remember the name of, but it looked like this:

But, my dream is to go to Vegas and try these out!
Insanity:

Wet n Wild in Orlando. I think you used to live there no? We went every summer when I was a kid, but havent been lately. That storm ride is off the heezy, but they have a new one that I think might destroy it, I hadnt heard of it until looking for pics for Storm, but check this out.

Nonsub...you are nuts. Does that bottom one just end right there? I wouldnt even be up that high. I get scared walking up the steps to go down the water rides.

We have a ride at Wonderland called Vortex as well, but it's more of a traditional suspended roller coaster.

It's pretty epic but the one you guys have looks amazing.

Ever go to any parks there? I went to Islands of Adventure about ten years ago when it first came out and it was pretty unreal. The parks these days are so incredible, makes ya feel like a little kid again.

Alfred 05-14-2009 02:56 PM

So what's the biggest coaster you guys have been on? Behemoth would be mine, 230 feet high, 77 mph.

Yeah, I used to work at Disney so I've been to all of the Disney parks a lot. As far as parks literally in Orlando go, I think the only one I've been to is the original Universal one. Never been to Islands of Adventure though I've heard it's pretty cool.

Hey speaking of Florida theme parks, do you remember Baseball and Boardwalk?

Thats rad, I've met alot of people that worked at Disney. Have not been there since I was very small. I used to love Pirates though and I heard they redid it. Kissimee and Orlando and all that is the same to me.

Yeah, The Beast is still there.. though for how long I have no idea. I've heard their closing a few rides, The Vortex being one of them :( :(.

Haha, Kiddie Coasters are surprisingly fun. You go around and around and it feels really fast.

Wow...that looks amazing. Where is it?

Antonio 05-14-2009 09:34 PM

Six Flags Great Adventure, just outside of Philadelphia. it's the tallest coaster i've seen, you can actually see the statue of liberty from the top, no joke.

Alfred 05-14-2009 09:35 PM

Six Flags Great Adventure

I kind of doubt that I'd have the guts to try that thing. :P

Antonio: that's because it is the tallest and fastest roller coaster around. It topped Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point.

NSW 05-14-2009 09:36 PM

Hell...I would be all over that thing. I feel like it should go on my "bucket list". Yeah, I like to aim high...

Antonio...did you actually ride it?

Antonio 05-14-2009 09:39 PM

3 times hahaha

1st time I was in the back and a little girl on the walkway was like "man you better get ready, you're gonna get thrown around"

Darkest Hour 05-14-2009 09:50 PM

i'm too much of a puss to ride a roller coaster.

lucifer_sam 05-14-2009 10:00 PM

^^ that thing is hella fun. as is the Millennium (much smoother) and the standup coaster they've got there.

also Top Thrill Dragster is sweet too but IMO not worth the 2+ hour wait for a fifteen second ride.
