As said, a nice gesture if you know he likes whiskey and will drink it. It would be embarrassing if he quit for the new year though.

Oh, I doubt it; his nightly rum and diet coke/whiskey and diet coke was a vital part of his de-stressing evening routine! Just need to decide what to get.
