I used to be more concerned about specs until I came to realise I mainly play old games nowadays.

I switched from a desktop to laptop earlier this year and I'm happy as long as it has enough RAM to yield near instant response times for my requirements. I've transferred most of my data which was spread over 5 hard drives to 2 large external hard drives. Since my 19" LCD would otherwise be sitting around doing nothing, I often use it as a second screen (particularly useful for programming).

Definitely worth working this summer.

I built the beast myself and runs games like crysis or Cod5 max at 1920X1200 (thats higher than 1080p) without max AA. I can play left 4 dead at over 100 fps near max.

I seem to be the only other person interested in this...

I'm not tech expert but man... No wonder you started a thread on this! Those are some specs to brag about. You're obviously a serious gamer.
I don't really have too much to brag of, but Macbook Pros never disappoint. I just use my laptop for recording and editing audio but nothing professional just a keen hobbyist, as well as for everyday work and pleasure.

and here's the best bit.................a whacking great 6GB processor.

Personally, because my computer is the core of my music studio, I have to be concerned with its capabilities.
For me it's not so much a nerd type thing. I do play the occasional game here and there and my computer can definitely handle anything I put on it, but I place far more focus on latency issues in music production than I would toward stuttering video resolution during a video game cut scene.

Actually its my first real computer (the last one was in 2001 hahaha store bought (my last one was a p3 900mhz with a 30 gb HDD 512mb ram and an fx 5200) I assume you have a 9400m and a 9600m>? Can you run sli if you wanted to? Macs sure are reliable don't ever feel bad about buying one.

Yes. My system is ludicrously overspecified in every area bar graphics card. I don't run anything more graphically demanding than TF2 on this machine for the time being, and as such, I don't really need a massively powerful card. It would be nice if my card supported HDCP, but that can wait until such time as an upgrade is needed.

Plus, having 12GB of ram and being able to use all of it is ****ING AWESOME. 64 bit rules!

What exactly do you do with your computer? Seems like a total overkill if you aren't encoding insane amounts of data. I didn't know zalman made gpu coolers (or are you mistaking that for your cpu) because there really is no point spending money on a cooler for an 8600gt when you could use that money to buy a card 3 times better.

The card was second hand from a friend for super cheap, and the stock cooler was wearing out on the fan, being really noisy. I replaced it for that reason. Its definitely a Zalman GPU cooler, since I'm using the intel stock cooler on the CPU. I forget the name. I don't need anything more on the card for now, since the only tangible benefit of a newer card would be to kick TF2 from 50FPS upwards, or to give me HDCP compatibility, neither of which are greatly pressing concerns.

And bear in mind, the GPU, Case, Fans, 2 of the Hard drives, and the Soundcards were all part of my old build. That machine's power supply developed a fault and started blowing things up, so this machine was built to replace it on short notice.
