Yes. It'd just be the same as comparing a kids movie to a movie made more for adults.

No. That isn't a fair comparison either.

I think it is.

But even if it isn't, what you're saying is that we can't make lists of our our favorite books or movies because there are some books or movies that are designed for kids. That doesn't make any sense to me:p:

No, of course you can list something intended for children amoung your favorites. I'm just saying comparing a book like Green Eggs and Ham with a Tom Clancy novel doesn't really seem fair does it?

If you really want to compair the two without taking the fact that one was intended for children into consideration... then in terms of character development, stor progression, organization, story and vocabulary Tom Clancy is going to win. Green Eggs and Ham beats it on rhyming... and pictures.

Maybe it wouldn't be fair but it's kind of the same as comparing some like Obituary- Slowly We Rot (Death Metal) to Nick Drake. Two completely different things that are both still very good.

My original idea was just to have people nominate their favorite books. IF someone ended up nominating a Dr. Seuss book or something like that, we'd just see if people actually voted it in. If it made it in, I guess people would consider it better than Tom Clancey

Members have lists of their 100 favorite albums, which they choose out of all the vast music they've listened to over the years. These lists compare everything that members listen to, from classical to jazz to noise rock to freak folk, and even children's music should they choose (hell, someone could have something like They Might Be Giants for sure). I do not understand the difference between comparing Beethoven and Bach, who many hold sacred, to The Sex Pistols and Aker****e vs. comparing the Bible and the Qur'an to Tom Clancy or Hemmingway for example. In the same way there are books that are considered classics, there are also albums that are considered classics that many think everyone should listen to. Society just looks at it differently.

EDIT: Sorry story, I totally didn't read your post.

someonecompletelyrandom 11-03-2009 08:39 PM

I'm not talking about different genres. We are talking purely about the differences between a book written for children and one written for adults.

JIMMY walked to school vs. The way she looked that night lifted my soul from the darkest corner of my depression.

Why the hell is it so difficult to understand?

Story, are there any five year olds here? No.

You really think that most adults, not to mention teenagers are going to vote for Doctor Seuss over Tom Clancy? No. But that certainly doesn't make the latter better. Cultural impact is really the only thing that one can compare between books like these, nothing more. And what do you mean people wouldn't vote for the Bible? By cultural impact alone, it's the most important book ever by a longshot. People are willing to kill for it. That's important.

I'm an adult and I would definitely vote for Dr. Seuss over Tom Clancy.
