MusicBanter Community Mediafire

I've started a Mediafire account for the regular posters here at MusicBanter. The purpose of which is to share our eclectic collections with other members of the community.

There are some important rules that MUST be followed in order to be included in this.
  • You have to contribute to the collection. This means uploading albums. Whether you want to upload your entire collection, a few of your favorites or use the account to upload abums that you post here on MB or on your blog is up to you. Leeching will not be tolerated and you'll be banned from the account.
  • When I give you the password, you can NOT share it with anybody else. Not your best friend, not your mum, not your dad. It is for your eyes only.
  • When you join the Mediafire make sure you categorize your stuff decently. Make a folder for your uploads, like say "Conan's Stuff" or "Conan's Files" at least. From there you can organize it how ever you want. I personally created several sub-folders (A-Z) and listed things by Artist, Album. But you can do it however you want, as long as the artist name is atleast included.

I've started to .rar and upload the files in my collection to get the ball rolling. PM me for login and be advised - if you don't contribute regularly you won't get in.

this seems like a cool idea. But aren't you worried about someone messing everything up on it. I hope it doesn't happen but always a possibility.

simplephysics 12-05-2009 04:21 PM

well i'm glad someone got the ball rolling. a folder per member seems to work nicely, from what I've seen. i'm game for this.

We've tried this before and the account was sabotaged by an untrusted member, but as long as the login info stays on the hush hush there shouldn't be any problems.

NumberNineDream 12-05-2009 04:25 PM

How many uploaded Gigs allowed in that account?

iron9567 12-05-2009 04:25 PM

That's cool I just don't want a good idea ruined by a troll. It would be interesting to see when it gets packed with traffic.

i definitely agree with it though, some obnoxious twat could ruin it for everybody if we permit free reign. at this point i think it's pretty easy to distinguish between members who can and cannot be trusted with the pw.

awesome idea Conan. i just hope it's okay with the admin.

Terrible Lizard 12-05-2009 04:49 PM

I'll throw in my sack of horrid goodies if you get the go-to.

Dr.Seussicide 12-05-2009 05:03 PM

I'm totally game for this, but #nine asked a good question. How many gigs per member is allowed? Well if there is a limit that is.

Mojo 12-05-2009 05:27 PM

This is a fantastic idea. I'm game to contribute.

storymilo 12-05-2009 05:58 PM

I'm in I suppose. So it's just a place to upload albums that we feel like uploading?

Rickenbacker 12-05-2009 06:00 PM

And you can download albums others using the account have uploaded.

storymilo 12-05-2009 06:04 PM

Cool. Oh and you have 666 posts:p:

It's unlimited. You can upload as much as you want at any time. The only catch is each file must be under 200 megabytes in size, so you may have to split larger works up.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-05-2009 06:24 PM

As it seems, I've given the password to one member and already my folder's have been deleted. This means crackdown - no entry unless you've over 500 quality posts. If I don't know you well you won't get in, but if you can get a respected member of MB to stick his/her neck out for you then you're in.

Account moved.

Akira 12-05-2009 06:26 PM

Name and shame.

Side note: How easy is it to browse? Say I had access and wanted to trawl through it, no specific album in mind, how easy is it to browse? Because I still think the RYM.com thing is a good idea.

It's easy to browse files. It makes it easier if you already have in mind what your fellow MB'ers taste is. You can also search by name or tag. I don't know how this Rate Your Music thing works.

RETRACTION: It may have been an error on my part. I didn't know MF deletes folders with no content in them. Still the password seems to have been changed... but for the sake of everybody I won't mention names.

Akira 12-05-2009 06:34 PM

Well RYM is a way of cataloguing albums etc, so if every album uploaded is listed there then it's easy to browse by artist, album, genre, year etc etc. Just a thought.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-05-2009 06:36 PM

How would it work in relation to mediafire?

Akira 12-05-2009 06:37 PM

Well obviously, any album uploaded to MF would have to be listed to RYM. Either a few people could do this to help out, or have the RYM account have the same password and then whoever uploads an album also adds to the list....or something like that.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-05-2009 06:39 PM

Yeah... it could work. If you guys want to do it then I say go for it - but as of right now I was just going to try to keep the least amount of work involved so we could get enough participants to really make this thing slammin.

EDIT: Uploading my music now... you guys are in luck if you like John Zorn.

Dr_Rez 12-05-2009 06:43 PM

Not to bash the idea, but is it "legal enough" to do without putting the site in jeopardy?

Craigslist didn't get shut down for advertising hookers. It's because Craigslist didn't advertise hookers, it's members did.

Besides I doubt the members of this site could keep their wallets from starving if they purchased all the music they listen to.

Your crazy, no one here downloads anything! And i dont have a second hard drive full of that stuff!

gunnels 12-05-2009 07:02 PM

I'm down.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-05-2009 07:05 PM

Alright send out your PMs if you want in.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-05-2009 07:14 PM

Oh gee... it's going to take me 15 hours to upload about half of my files :-/

+81 12-06-2009 02:13 PM

I'd be into trying this providing you think my 500+ posts meet the quality standards.

More like 676 +!

Akira 12-06-2009 02:30 PM

This is a comment on +81, just a general one. I think Conan should think hard about who he hands the password to, post count is irrelevant, you should use your knowledge of the people who ask.

NumberNineDream 12-06-2009 02:36 PM

It's more about the quality of the posts I say. e.g Gotjuice has less than 300 posts, tho I think we can call him a regular.
Plus, It's pretty easy to get our numbers to +500 in less then 2 months when we just say nothing.

I like and use RYM myself, but it seems like it would be a pain in the ass to have a MBMF profile that needs to be updated every time an album is uploaded to MF. Would one person update it? That seems like a PITA because everyone would have to PM their uploads to that one person, who would have to add it to the RYM profile, etc. Not to mention, RYM logs you out every time you access your profile from another computer. What does that mean? That means if everyone that has MBMF access had access to the RYM profile, people would be unknowingly kicking others out whenever they log in.

That said, I've never used a MF account so I don't know how searchable it is or anything. Also one big question...is there any way to know the bitrate of files uploaded by others? I know they could put it in the rar file name, but let's face it, most don't care and won't bother stating it. If there is, I'd be interested in participating. If there's no way to tell, just like with most blog downloads, then I'll pass.

Definitely agree, I know a whole lot of my posts are pretty useless.

Just a thought to throw out there on the issue on letting people in. Instead of going off the persons quality post count. Why not make it where everyone that has the password decide if the person gets the password. That way it makes it easier to know if a person gets in or not. Well it's just a thought to try and make it easier for you all.
thanks
the iron man

NumberNineDream 12-06-2009 05:43 PM

The question is: How can the man decide?

Akira 12-06-2009 05:44 PM

He has to use his own judgement..he's a big boy now, lol.

BTown 12-06-2009 05:49 PM

This sounds really interesting, hopefully I'll be able to participate.

Schizotypic 12-06-2009 06:36 PM

What would be the point of this? I mean, unless were all uploading our rarest albums, and even if we are, couldn't we find them somewhere else? It'd be years before there's enough music on that account to be as convenient as finding music in other ways. Plus, isn't there are a limit on how much you can upload? Like what if I wanted to upload my entire library? Then what? Maybe I will if someone can convince me of why.

BTown 12-06-2009 06:43 PM

^As stated earlier in the thread there is no limit to what you can upload, but everything has to be under 200 MB. I don't see this as a way of finding a certain album, but discovering new music by seeing whatever has to bring to the table.
