I've been in 'situations.' I don't like violence, kinda think if you can't solve it with your mouth, don't have an opinion, you're clearly not intelligent enough for it. |

Yes, I used a wrist lock in the fight I descibed above. Actually I mispoke, though. It wasn't kote gaeishi http://www.yorkjitsu.org/graphics/locks/wrist1_3.jpg http://www.yorkjitsu.org/graphics/locks/wrist1_4a.jpg it was this lock I can't remember the name of that I used to capture his arm and hit his face aganist the car: Google Image Result for http://www.wristlocksexpert.com/standing_wrist_lock.jpg However, it showed my lack of accomplishment at the time, or my urgency at dealing with several people instaed of remainnig calm. I should have been able to hold him against the car or folded it behind his back and used him as a sheild to talk the other guys out of it. Instead I let averythnig speed up on me and just smashed him down and retreated |
Actually, maybe specific techniques aren't the most important thing you learn in martial arts as much as learning to stay calm, see everything in slow, real time instead of seeing a blur, and just nkowing where to stand, how to move your feet, how to turn your body.
Your best move, and I've done it twice, may be just avoiding something and then running away |

^ Seconded.
People mistakenly think that they can talk themselves out of any fight, but fail to realize that sometimes you don't pick the fight, and you certainly don't pick the type of person you end up in a shaky situation with.... you just end up having to be in one out of simply not having another choice besides laying on the ground and hugging your nuts. If your exit strategy is to scream at the top of your lungs and run away, then go ahead... but more often than not, you won't get the chance before you're having to defend yourself from a guy who simply just wants to use your face for recreational purposes while you're halfway unaware. The best you can do is to try to not end up in a situation or environment that breeds violent scenarios. Sounds easier than it is in today's world. While the average adult may not spend his/her time in clubs or other typically violent places, the entire world is a typically violent place... but just at different percentages. When you're standing there fueling up your car at a gas station and some immature drunks decide that your quick glance in their direction is unforgivable, you realize there's only so many places you can hide from other people's barbaric tendencies. You either learn how to deal with it, or don't. That's really the only decision there is to make. |
The only serious fight I got into was when I was in 4th grade with a kid in my class who had failed twice and was two years older than me. He was also a good foot taller than me.
He was calling me a pussy for no reason and then asked me to fight. I have no idea why but I said yes. We punched each other a few times, then he pushed me and I fell down, and he declared that he beat me and left. I do do "Fight Club style" fights alot with my friends and I win a lot of those though. |
Yeah I've been in fights. Kicked some ass and got my ass kicked - by my own brother even, lol. Not to say I regret them, I enjoyed them, but I wouldn't want to get in a fight now. There's too much riding on my career to have a misdemeanor on my name. If there were no consequences however...

You've probably never been in a situation where you don't get to choose not to fight or don't even get a chance to talk yourself out of it, but they happen. |
