I'm nicer to my 18-19yr old coworkers (especially girls) because they're the same age as my little sister and I couldn't ever imagine being nasty to her for any reason.

I was out with some mates and a couple of their friends that I didn't know, and I'm sitting next to this girl in this cafe (sometimes we're the kinda douchey hipster teens that go get coffee for fun). We're talking and she starts going through photos on her phone and one of them is of this guy pulling a crazy pose with a maniacal facial expression out in some woods somewhere. I said something like "Ha, who's that nutter?" to which she replied (with a completely straight face) "That's my brother. He has special needs."

It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't one of those times when everyone just happens to stop talking as you're about to put your foot in it. There's no coming back from that.

I just realizing something I hadn't previously considered. There were 3 catastrophic disasters in the US space program. The first was Apollo I on my 9th birthday. the second was the Challenger disaster on the day after my 28th birthday. The third was the Columbia tragedy five days after my 45th birthday. The inescapable conclusion of this is that all three were my fault.
