I'm kind of racist. Not intellectually. I'm as anti-racist as anybody else in that regard. I've just been raised around a bunch of racist douchebags and without realizing it, a lot of their prejudices got under my radar and creeped into my brain. My family isn't like, Klan racist or anything, they're more like working-class Irish racist. They don't hate minorities, they just have really ignorant prejudices and aren't self-aware of them, which is odd since they're for the most part pretty educated, worldly people.

Sometimes when I'm watching the news and I see a back guy who's been arrested for whatever, I can't help but have a reflexive thought like "It figures..." Instantly I realize this, and try to squash it, but I have no real control of it in the moment. It's pretty much impossible to get rid of.

It's sad that that's what our society does though. Unfortunately, even though I'm brown, I'm plagued with similar responses in my mind when I see things like that.

I think there are a lot of people guilty of unconscious pigeon-holeing, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. It's probably more prevalent in Western societies, and it's something that needs to be worked on.

Why would you think that? I've never seen anything to suggest that other parts of the world are magically more tolerant. Racism and prejudice are just sort of human nature.

John Wilkes Booth 08-13-2013 11:42 PM

I remember one time when I lived in Florida I was walking to the corner store at night and I was stopped by the police. After they searched me and ran a check they gave me my belongings back and then one of them pulled me to the side and told me I shouldn't be walking around at night in this neighborhood with 'my complexion' since 'these people will take your iPod.' True story.

I can't say his advice was really all that ill-founded but it was a little surprising how non subtle he was about it.

I feel like some areas of the eastern world aren't as racist as the western world but they do have prejudice and it's more related to religious beliefs.

Haha, Turkish people are so so so so so SO racist. Every time they see a vaguely Asian-looking person they all start yelling "Konnichi wa konnichi wa" to make fun of them. It's really frustrating for my Chinese friend.

Also, numerous Turks have told me they "hate Arabs." I even have a recording of a group of educated guys discussing how they want to kill all the Palestinians. It is so bad. I try to change my boyfriend's mind when ever he says something racist, but it is sooo engrained I'm not sure he'll ever be a completely non-racist person.

note: I just realized that my comment is also kinda inherently racist. go me.

theres a certain part of western society that is completely idiotic in my opinion and have some weird obsession with constantly guilting and shaming westerners and exagerating thing. not that i have living experience in the far or middle east or anywhere but the usa lol but i have friends who have lived abroad or been in the mlitary and been in plenty of counrties and my best high school friend has been in china for the past 5 years. eastern culture is incredibly prejudice. its not a western phenomenon like some idiots over here would have you believe. like someone else said the differences probably lie within racism vs religion/sex

batlord i have always applauded your confession of loving breasts and now i applaud this confession. its very common, i have caught myself doing it before. again, its always a constant battle against idiots who want to shame and guilt white middle class men but i am not bothered by my upbringing or things that are ingrained in me because i am able to recognize them and view the world with a fair outlook.

id be lying if i said i never used the n word or made racist jokes around my white friends. some of my friends havent changed, some have. i believe i have in that regard but i think its completely stupid beyong belief for the media to try to crush paula deen for admitting she once used the n word. i really hate to break it to anyone but there is probably a reeeeally good portion of whites who have uttered that word at least once in their past. and i dont think that sayin a homophobic comment or racist comment makes you a homophobe or a racist either

See, you don't really know Paula Deen's case at all. Most people think "oh she said the n word 25 years ago. It's so unfair to go after her." No that's not what she was being charged with at all.

I don't have the bullet points off the top of my head but I will go find them and post it so that you can know EXACTLY what she was being charged off. She only got off because a white woman was the person doing the accusing and not the people that she was being systematically racist against. It was so much bigger than just a n word one off. There was also porn involved lol. Lemme get the facts for you.

Edited to add Paula Deen Allegations

Summary:

Paula Deen, while planning her brother's wedding in 2007, was asked what look the wedding should have. She replied, "I want a true southern plantation-style wedding." When asked what type of uniforms the servers should wear, Paula stated, "well what I would really like is a bunch of little n*ggers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around;

Black staff had to use the back entrance to enter and leave restaurant;

Black staff could only use one bathroom;

Black staff couldn’t work the front of the restaurants;

Brother Bubba stated his wishes: “ I wish I could put all those n*ggers in the kitchen on a boat to Africa”;

Bubba asked a black driver and security guard "don’t you wish you could rub all the black off you and be like me? You just look dirty; I bet you wish you could." The guy told Bubba he was fine as is;

Bubba on President Obama: they should send him to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, so he could n*gger-rig it;

He shook an employee (Black again) and said” F your civil rights…you work for me and my sister Paula Deen;

Paula’s son Jaime's best friend managed the Lady & Sons restaurant. He threatened to fire all the 'Monkeys' in the kitchen. When Paula found out…she slapped him on the wrist and suggested that the employee visited Paula's $13,000,000 mansion so he felt special and could be massaged.
