I've learned this many times. I've moved a lot, and I've changed the scenery a lot, and everyone I've ever met has walked out of my life like I never existed. A lot of the people who have "friended" me on facebook actually know me, but I only really talk to
people I've never met before but have more in common than most people I already know.
And these people I actually know - people I've gone to school with, that I've worked with, friends of friends - they never bother to ask how I'm doing. I don't exist to them. It's easier to have acquaintances; I've never really called many people my "friend" because the connotations are too emotional and I don't need to get caught up in that, knowing they'll leave eventually.
