it's not an "idiom" - it's British slang

The Virgin 03-25-2011 06:48 AM

i think i better create a thread addressing my quirks about my english frustrations. like the essential when to use do/does, idioms, etc.

read more comics, watch more English movies undubbed, watch more English television, post here more

I wouldn't have been able to read Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow were it not for exposure to the American vernacular on message boards - i'm only used to the British style of literature and found it near impenetrable

since we're on the topic, i remember one time when my teacher gave us an exam english conversation. here it goes:

teacher: Do you mind waiting?
me: ye's i'll wait.

and she gave me a failing grade for that specific answer alone. i was in grade 4 at that time and she was not able to correct me. what should have been the answer then if it was wrong? that's one of the most mind bugging puzzle that up to now i have no answer.

BarelyBreathing 03-25-2011 07:09 AM

She was asking if it bothered you to wait. You answered "yes".

Speaking on the English language, my text twist score is over two mil and I haven't cheated.
