What's really sad is how little coverage his death has gotten so far. Not a single major (US) news outlet has covered it. The biggest has been Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound. Usually the New York Times does a good job of covering the death of anyone moderately notable in the classical music world, but ... nothing.

:(

To be honest I had not heard of him before this, and do not even recall a thread on him. Seems like he is too unknown to Western audiences.

Fixed. Those of mine or rostasi's age knew all about Tomita. There's also this thread.

He had a few albums in the 70's that were somewhat popular. Snowflakes Are Dancing actually made it into the top 50 in the US, and was nominated for 4 Grammys. In my book that should be enough to warrant at least a small obit in some of the major media outlets, but I'm still seeing nothing. :(

Is there a rec for a newb who doesn't listen to modern classical? I always love hearing what those crazy Japanese do with our music.
