Born Shahnour Vaghinag Aznavourian to immigrant parents living in France, Charles Aznavour died today aged 94. Described as a "French pop deity" he was also arguably the most famous Armenian* of his time - or so says wikipedia: "In 1998, Aznavour was named Entertainer of the Century by CNN and users of Time Online from around the globe. He was recognized as the century's outstanding performer, with nearly 18% of the total vote, edging out Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan."
R.I.P.
Spoiler for *:
The Armenians have a long, complicated and sad history, as I began to learn when I happened to work with a group of them in London in the 1970s. They were charming and cosmopolitan; well-to-do survivors, professionals with backgrounds from Beiruit, Paris or Oxford. One guy was partly proud, partly contemptuous of Charles Aznavourian because of the name change thing. His own given name, he told me, he would never Anglicize: it meant "Revenge" in Armenian.
