My guess is that it was just an act, and not really what was actually recorded, unless he has a pickup built into the fretboard, and that's crazy talk.

By open string I meant open capo, which would technically be "open 14th fret," numnuts.

EDIT: I just tested it out. You can press the frets behind the capo without affecting the sound of what you pluck below the capo.

Huh? Right around the 30 second mark when he starts playing on the lower frets (behind the capo) those notes shouldn't sound nearly as clear as they do since the capo would be choking them off - unless the tension on the capo is super light.

Those are 14 fret notes, he could be playing that without using his left hand at all. Listen to it, it's only three notes and a pinch.
