We have a digital house and two 35mm theaters. Reel to Reel really is an old term now. I don't know anybody that actually uses a reel to reel projectors anymore. We use platter systems which makes it a lot more convenient. Basically, with reel to reel systems you would have to have two of them. One would be running reel 1 and the other would be holding reel 2. When reel 1 would be almost don't you would cue up reel two and "switch" over. Then you take reel 1 off and replace with reel 3.

Platter systems allow you to splice together all the reels into one giant 35mm film. This way you can just run the entire movie through at once without having to switch at all. It isn't a piece of cake but it certainly beats out having to switch 5 times a showing.

The digital house works like an ipod playlist. I upload trailers and movies from a hard drive and arrange them in a playlist. Then I click play. Easy. It's also sadly going to be the end of my job when all theaters are running digital projectors. Maybe I'll go into repair after that. Things always break.

You probably already said this somewhere, but what kind of movies do you show, generally?

I'm essentially a freelance writer who picks up some occasional dough from visual art. I'm going to be supplementing this with other work, but that's the gist of what I do.

Our booking department is a little retarded. We show limited release films and foreign films a lot but once in a while they'll give us a film that just doesn't belong in a "art house". For example we had Puss N Boots for a couple of weeks. I wrote a lot of emails disclaiming my dislike of that. It basically made us look like a bunch of morons and they got the hint a bit. I think that they book us to try to make as much money as possible which is understandable but then they shouldn't call out theater an "art house". It's very frustrating, especially because of how much of a film geek I am. It's been better recently though. For example our line up this week is "A Separation", "The Deep Blue Sea", and "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen". Hopefully we'll get "Bully" sometime soon. It's supposed to be amazing.

at this point and time in my life i am a truck driver.....what they call a line haul driver....basically i pick up an empty 53 foot trailer in Reno drive it to Woodland CA (about 20 miles north of Sacramento) drop it and pick up a loaded trailer to bring back for the kid who does the route.....the product is for Ross stores....i started this job last night!....its a pretty good gig....i basically work from 7pm to about 230am and it pays well enough with full company paid medical (which i need ) and i fell i basically get paid to listen to music for 8 hours....which obviously is a bonus for me

edit: i'm pretty sure i am the only truck driver in the world with a Current 93 tattoo and who wears a DEVO energy dome while driving
Wow, stomping through my neck of the woods. I lived in Dixon and Davis the last couple years.

I might need to look into this line of work. How does one break into this kind of work? What kind of licenses/experience needed? etc...

Also, if I do ever see a Devo-hat wearing truck driver, I'll know it's you...
