Them: "It was shit."

GuitarBizarre 12-08-2012 10:47 AM

My first gig was Megadeth on the System Has Failed tour, at Manchester Academy.

I knocked one of the lenses out of my glasses during the first song, and spent the rest of the gig alternating between headbanging and moshing, and screaming lyrics, taking periodic breaks to close one eye and look at the stage through the remaining lens of my glasses.

I still have the shirt.

Your comment about every journal being "long-winded album reviews" or short one-liners with youtubes is hardly applicable in my case. Actually, the first is certainly applicable (guilty!) and maybe the second but NOT ONLY those! I go to immense lengths to do different and interesting things in my journal, of which the below are only a few, and I am always looking for new slants and ideas to keep readers interested. There can be nothing as boring as album review after album review for some people, which is why I try to keep it fresh and new.

It's not about just one thing, you never know what or how she's going to write next. That's the sort of thing I'd like to see more of which is why I said I hoped to see more originality in peoples writing. It would be nice if people mixed things up a bit.

Interesting points here and really just a matter of opinion. Basically I chose a journal format that I myself would want to see either on the internet or in book form if I was getting into a certain subject. I usually like stuff that is straight to the point, focused, reasonably thorough and with a little room for diversity.

I'm not interested in reading about what band somebody was listening to when they had their first shag, what music their cat likes, or what they were listening to this morning over breakfast, some people really dig this kind of thing but I don't.

The beauty of journal writing, is that there are no rules or criteria that members have to follow, so they're free to operate it how they want.

Exactly my point.
Which is why I expressed disappointment in the first place at how similar most (not all) peoples journals were.

Well how much different could you reasonably expect that they become?

Journal entries for me, when I use to write more than I do no, were a fairly involved time sink. The feedback you get from an investment like that is almost nothing.

Subsequently, I said "well I'm not writing for myself here" and started posting youtube videos. If I wanted to know my own thoughts, I wouldn't need to write them in a journal.

If that was true then you're falling into the same trap as what I think everybody else is.

If you think writing a journal is time consuming then write about things you can sum up in 3 or 4 sentences. Hell, do an entry with no words whatsoever if you want to.

Just don't resort to posting hundreds of f*cking youtube videos like every other bastard here.

Does anybody want to comment on the nice things I said in my nominations now? nobody else is getting this much stick over how they voted.

Biggest Virtuoso: Freebase Dali (I've known many musicians, but when I listened to Freebase's music several years ago I felt for the first time that I was hearing creative genius. I hope he is busy making his own music. Do it for us if not for yourself. ;)); Plankton (An excellent guitarist, Plank extracts an exquisite range of emotions out of an instrument that some people treat as if it were good for making only one type of sound); Aidy (His music shows great skill, which I admire even though his presence here has been mostly to promote his songs.)

Janszoon 12-09-2012 11:04 AM

Best avatar - Pedestrian. Not for a specific one, she just generally has great avatars.
Sexiest Member (male) - Abstain.
Sexiest Member (female) - Abstain.
Most Inane - Norg. Saying absolutely nothing worthwhile as inarticulately as possible since 2009.
Angriest member - Abstain motherfuckers!
Biggest Drama Whore - Above. I like her but the amount of drama got ridiculous.
Nicest member - Lisnaholic. Super-nice even when he's annoyed about something. I wish there were more like him.
Best debater - Unknown Soldier. I don't always agree with him, but he has an impressive ability to dismantle other people's arguments without breaking a sweat.
Worst debater - Hip Hop Bunny Hop. Watching him post links to things that undermine the very arguments he's trying to make is pretty hilarious, I'll give him that.
Best Writer - Mojo. I don't have much to add, I just find him to be one of the most articulate people on MB.
Biggest Virtuoso - Freebase. Multi-instrumentalist, excellent sound engineer, DJ, etc. The guy can do it all. I've always been very impressed.
Smartest poster - Thom Yorke. Give this man a riddle and he will solve it.
Funniest member - The Batlord. Guy cracks me up, and he's my favorite person to exchange friendly putdowns with on MB.
Best Mediator - Burning Down. Very level-headed and a great mod, what more is there to say?
Biggest Troll - Abstain.
Most Improved Member - Blastingas10. I think it was mostly about him getting in tune with tone of MB. I'm glad he has because I think he adds a lot to the conversations here.
Most Underrated Poster - Trollheart. I feel like he's noticed but not appreciated as much as he should be. I wish there were more people who put as much energy into this place as he does.
Most Obscure Music Taste - Mojo. I feel like lately every time I see him talking about a band they're either unsigned or extremely difficult to track down. And they usually seem to be quite good too.
Best Music Taste - This year I'm nominating Blarobbarg. He has one the most eclectic tastes on MB but doesn't simply love whatever he hears. He's a critical listener with strong opinions who clearly thinks a lot about music. I definitely respect that.
Biggest music nerd - Anteater. Extremely knowledgeable about a variety of music and never afraid to embrace the uncool.
Best Thread Starter - Urban. Somehow he's able to make any topic a worthwhile discussion or at least a hilarious discussion. It's a gift.
Most Missed Poster - Jackhammer. Not that he isn't here anyone, but he's not here nearly as much as he used to be. I really miss talking to him on a more regular basis.
Thread of the Year - Metal Wars. For quite a while this year this thread reached level of awesomeness rarely attained.
Best Journal - Anteater's Muzak 101: Legitimizing Smooth Jazz For The Unwashed Masses. He hasn't done as much with it as I'd like, but I love the concept and found it fascinating to read serious commentary on music that is usually dismissed (including by me) as the aural equivalent of a screen saver..
Moderator of the Year - LoathsomePete. I feel like the amount of work he does behind the scenes doesn't get enough recognition and I can't count the number of times I've gone to delete some spam only to find he's beaten me to it by half a second.
Best new 2012 member - Rjinn. She's gotten a lot of nominations already, and with good reason, because she pretty great and is a real asset to the site. I'm really happy she joined.
Member of the Year 2012 - Plankton. It's hard to explain, but there's a tone that this guy brings to every conversation he's a part of that's how I wish this place would always be.
Biggest Lounge Lizard - Tuna. At least lately. He's definitely made some of the most memorable threads there in recent memory.
Member you'd most like to meet in real life - Bob, Jackhammer, Engine. Three guys I could definitely enjoy a beer with.
Member you'd most want to avoid meeting in real life - Anyone who tries to sell kitchen supplies here.
Biggest Wanna-Be Moderator - Abstain.
Most amusing Shoutboxer - Abstain.

Best Avatar:
SATCHMO`s latest, Chives`s little retro gem, and UrbanHatemonger; his pic makes Brian Jones look sinister, vulnerable and tacky all at the same time.
Sexiest Member (Female):
Never quite remember whose photo is who, and then people go changing their names, but I think FLECHER and Hermione are both attractive, and Pedestrian too. Perhaps they could all post some new photos for us; once in bathing costume and once in evening dress.
Nicest Member:
VEGANGELICA is such a nice person, especially to newbies and underdogs. So she has a kind of independent, courageous niceness. tore and Janszoon are always helpful, always sensible.
Best Debater:
Voted for tore last year and don`t see any reason to change it; he is polite, rational and dignified.
Biggest Virtuoso:
It happens all the time in the elections; people are ignorant but they vote anyway. With that in mind, I`m voting for Bloozcrooz and GuitarBizarre here.
Smartest Poster:
He seems to be a rather polarizing member, but UrbanHatemonger tells it like he sees it and really knows how to defend himself. He wins my vote on the strength of a recent post, which went something like this: “People need to distinguish between contempt and anger.”
Funniest Member:
I regret that I answered Batlord rather sharply once, but I see now that he, more consistently than anyone else, tries to inject some humour into MB, and usually succeeds.
Best Mediator:
Janszoon always comes across as good-natured and level-headed.
Biggest Troll:
He`s an intriguing guy that I can`t quite work out. I enjoy reading his posts, but he has a tendency to chase the girls and get caught up in ping-pong exchanges with other members, which makes Franco Pepe Kalle a troll, I suppose.
Most Underrated Poster:
He discreetly contributes a lot to the music forums, but I feel that stp gets overlooked because he never gets caught up in personality squabbles or anything. He also gets overlooked because he helps so much with the under-subscribed FAIR album club. Thanks, stp. mrd00d also keeps a low profile – in fact I`m wondering if he`s still posting. Zarbaqual only seems to post in a few places, which is why he is also rather under the radar.
Most Obscure Music Taste:
Frownland seems ready to explore all kinds of music ...
Best Music Taste:
Like last year, this again goes to Blastingas10 . He likes a lot of the same stuff as me and what could be better than that ? Same goes for Frownland too.
Most Missed Poster:
Howard,of course, the Duck should win this because he won`t be coming back at all. On the other hand, we can hope that Jack Pat and s_k may one day return.
Thread of the Year:
What happened to Howard part II affected me more than any other thread this year. WWWP`s Member Gallery is a lot of fun, and a generous gesture on the part of WWWP.
Journal of the Year:
Ashamed to say that Trollheart`s is the only one I`ve looked at really.
Moderator of the Year:
Once again Pedestrian deserves this title. She does so much mod stuff and still finds time to open threads to pursue her special interests.
Best New Member 2012:
For fitting in very well from the start: Rock N`Roll Clown , Rjinn and Plankton
Member you'd most like to meet in real life:
PoorOldPo has a very natural posting style, so I imagine that sitting in a pub with him would be both comfortable and fun. I`d like stp and Pedestrian to be there too.
Biggest Wanna-Be Moderator:
Just because there is a hard-working team of mods doesn`t mean that individual members shouldn`t behave responsibly too. This is something Trollheart understands.

I`d like to say thanks very much to anybody who has nominated me this year, and I`d like to propose a category for next year:
People I`d like to interact with more, but somehow never really do :
This is where I`d put Goofle11, Neapolitan, Blarrobargg and a few others.

I'm just really, really into my local music scene and go to a lot of gigs. And obviously they usually invite other bands out of the area to play with them, and then I look for similar artists to them online and blah blah.

Oh and thanks to everyone else who has voted me, especially RVCA. That one kind of took me by surprise so thank you for that.

Trollheart 12-09-2012 11:44 AM

Just wanted to pop in and throw a  and a  at Mr Dave. Thanks for voting for me, man, but seriously? "Most obscure musical taste"? I would have thought I have the least obscure musical taste of just about anyone here, in fact, had the category suggested "Most mainstream music taste" been included, I feel I would have won that unopposed!

Nevertheless, shocked as I am, thanks for the vote! And also to those who voted for me recently, including Lisnaholic and Janszoon. :thumb:

Hey, by the way, what do we get if we win the nomination? Is it cash? Do we get cash? I hope we get cash. :)

Wow, thanks Jansz, I'm honored! That means a lot coming from you, since I consider you to have pretty much one of the best musical tastes on MB, if not the best. Plus, a lot of what I listen to I actually listen to because of something you posted. So maybe that's why you nominated me, I'm just copying you.

Member you'd most like to meet in real life: First I would meet up with 6underground and we would spend a few hours together and then we would join the MB party that I have in mind:
Since I get to choose two others for my official nominations, Janzsoon and Urban and I would spend some time drinking in an exclusive private room of the place where the MB party takes place. After that, we all go downstairs and meet up with everybody who I have ever noticed on MB who were all invited, most of which have attended.
I can hardly imagine the insane fun that would ensue. I would probably first pay a visit to the Minnesota kids: Sparky, Phantom Limb, and Forward to Death, and I would have brought Fred Hale Sr. with me because he’s got the medicinal shit. As we light it up, anticipation would certainly find us. So we all partake and spend however long it takes to talk about whatever each of us feel like. Of course PoorOldPo would have shown up and joined us at some point. Ideally, VEGANGELICA would also join us and I would back up her inevitable argument about how slaughtering animals is needless and wrong in today’s developed world. She and I would, of course, be shouted down and so I would leave that segment of the party.
Then I’d go back into the darkness of the main room and find Bob, jackhammer, Mojo, and Pedestrian talking and I would somehow insert myself into their conversation.
A fight would break out between Hip Hop Bunny Hop and the legions of people there who hate him including Trollheart and god knows who else so I’d call FETCHER. over to subdue the small men and WWWP to console HHBH and make sure that he stops flailing his fists. But first I’d see if Janszoon wants to take a few swings at the Bunny before the fight stops.
I’d look around for TheBig3 for a minute and try to figure him out while I’m completely wasted. No big deal if I don't find him. By now, most of us would be several sheets to the wind and the party is winding down. Of course, somebody would have their laptop open looking at MB and we might give a small chuckle to all of the one-liners that The Batlord has been posting for the last few hours. And somebody might pay attention to Goofle’s opinions on the 20 albums that he just downloaded. This would remind me that there’s another geek I need to talk to before the night is over and so I go find Exoskeletal and talk movies for a while. Hopefully jackhammer would join us.
Then the party will disperse and several of us have received and read Hermione’s text inviting us to go to some dark, private place and do some lines with her and discuss popular literary fiction into the morning hours. I’d go with them.
The sun would come up and I’d finally meet Tumor, who thankfully stayed away from the party the night before like I asked her to because lord knows what she would have done with whom during the chaos.
She and I would have a frank discussion about the realities of the nature of our lives and the world around us and then we’d all go home.

Thanks Engine, though as a bit of a fringe dweller there's probably a few more deserving of nicest member.

Fringe or not, I think you deserve a chance to get some votes.

You're welcome, Homey.

Also, I totally forgot to mention LoathsomePete. There's no way I'd leave the party without talking to him and thanking him for all the good music he's turned me on to for the last couple years.

Also too, I realize Exoskeletal joined before 2012 but I still consider him new.

Trollheart 12-09-2012 05:44 PM

Engine, that sounds like one hell of a party! :band: Better go get my visa sorted!
I wouldn't fight with HHBH though --- I'm an old man, and there are much fitter members who could, and would, fight with him while I watched and shouted encouragement, sipping a cold drink! :) Ah, Christmas! Where would we be without it? ;)

Also, why doesn't your Santa hat burn? It must be what, several hundred degrees up there in the smokestack!

Aw, don't underestimate yourself. The guy's already had his mandible broken (or cranium, I forget which) and, as you say, a bunch of other people will be in on it so go ahead and get in there. You'll like it and HHBH will respectfully take it.

Also, nobody worry about the cost of visas, transport, lodging, medical bills or food and drink. This is my fantasy so I've got you all covered. Just PM me your invoices.

Franco Pepe Kalle 12-09-2012 07:31 PM

Engine, where do you live btw?

Sansa Stark 12-09-2012 07:33 PM

Engine, what is your address and geographic coordinates, btw?

Don't worry. You're invited to the party.

Key 12-09-2012 07:49 PM

Am I invited? If not, i'll hunt you down and slit your throat.

Of course, you are also invited, Bloozcrooz. In fact I feel that you need to be there. I won't accept any excuses like "I have my kid that night" or anything. You're coming.

Ha, of course you're invited. But you should know that I know how to deal with schizos (my own family so don't get cocky) and I'm paying for security.

See you there.

Why do I have to be the one to console Jimbo? Lame.

You kinda openly volunteered for it, Dear. PM if you need further explanation.

In short, I'm a missionary and I'm going to work with street children. I'll also be helping to distribute food around the country at specific sites (about 50% of Nicaraguan children are classified as "undernourished," which is a kind way of saying starving). I'll be taking care of families who live in La Chureca, which is a prominent garbage dump community where families live on less than $3 a day, if even that. I'll also be studying while I'm there.

And yeah, you should totally get into the Shouty. It's always good to see some members who don't get in often. :)

BTW, where am I in this epic party? I promise to drive if you let me come!

Also BTW, I edited my post on the first page. Voted for a few more people, changed several other votes.

Well I am house broken, so I can like sleep on the carpet or something, if things get out of hand you can always count on the stoner irishman who has sanctioned some couch area for people to chill out in a house that isn't his.

Aw, now I feel bad for keying your car and peeing in your mailbox.
