* * * * * Best Avatar: The Batlord (When you want to see pictures of sexy women, his avatar is the place to look on MB--and he thoughtfully changes them with the seasons!); Plankton (I always smile when I see that cute, tiny shrimp-critter down in the corner of its vast, lonely world); Vanilla (I like that her avatars express her music passion and personality so well.) Sexiest Member (Male): Freebase Dali (He's an attractive fellow and I hope he knows it); TheBig3 (His running photo and the one where he posed like a scarecrow in a dance-off made me realize, hey, this is a handome albeit very conservative-looking man...who looks nothing like I expected based on his irate-sounding posts!); Zaqarbal (A dark-haired, fluffy, artistic, passionate Spaniard with a daring, wild side equals hot!); Honourable mentions: CanwllCorfe (for dramatic, brooding, bald-headed beauty) and Jackhammer (for his sensitive tough-man, biceps-like-rocks gorgeousness). And the Award for Cutest Member (Male) goes to our very own Conan!! Sexiest Member (Female): Hermione (Her striking, large eyes in her pretty, pixie face always startle me in a good way); Rjinn (She reminds me of a female Marc Bolan!); Vanilla (Beautiful hair, beautiful almond-shaped eyes, a sexy demeanor, and that smoking photo of her licking her finger is seared in my brain). Award for Cutest Member (Female): DayvanCowboy. <-- Daww! (And she knits!) Most Inane: Angriest Member: Urban Hatemonger ? and also Loathsome Pete: Quote:

Biggest Drama Whore: Nicest Member: ribbons (Liz always has a kind word to say to people with whom she interacts); lisnaholic (He is tactful, appreciative, and respectful of others); FRED HALE SR. (Fred goes out of his way to offer friendly support, with this thread providing a good example.) Best Debater: Tore (Tore doesn't just debate like a god. He *is* God. :p:) Worst Debater: Best Writer: MoonlitSunshine (He's a thoughtful, careful, expressive, and amiable writer); slappyjenkins (Slappy is playful and honest with a great sense of comedic timing! I enjoy reading the free flow of his thoughts); sopsych (While some people's short posts say very little, sopsych's concise writing style retains the most important ideas about a topic and has a wider scope than the brevity suggests. He chooses to present the iceberg's tip while I like to show the whole iceberg, and I enjoy that difference.) Biggest Virtuoso: Freebase Dali (I've known many musicians, but when I listened to Freebase's music several years ago I felt for the first time that I was hearing creative genius. I hope he is busy making his own music. Do it for us if not for yourself. ;)); Plankton (An excellent guitarist, Plank extracts an exquisite range of emotions out of an instrument that some people treat as if it were good for making only one type of sound); Aidy (His music shows great skill, which I admire even though his presence here has been mostly to promote his songs.) Smartest Poster: Tore (If I want a thorough and logical yet kind answer to a question, he'd be the one to whom I'd turn.) Funniest Member: The Batlord (Many of his flippant and goofy comments amuse me greatly); slappyjenkins (His posts contain comic gems that leave me laughing long after I log off); ribbons (Liz's subtle jokes, our mutual love of puns, and her playful mindset are delightful. I love that she doesn't make jokes at people's expense; instead, she makes jokes *with* them); honorable mentions: Blarobbarg and Conan (masters of light-hearted banter) Best Mediator: Burning Down, Janszoon, Pedestrian Biggest Troll: Most Improved Member: Most Underrated Poster: Howard the Duck (The Duck posted prolifically about music and listened to a wide range, shared very honestly about his life and his issues, and made personal and valued connections with other members, including me, and so I've always felt sad when people devalued his contributions); Franco Pepe Kalle (Pepe's passion for the music and musicians he loves is a beautiful thing. I wish him well and enjoy his being one of our members); hip hop bunny hop (I've always felt I get along with him just fine, so seeing people riled up over him amuses me. How can you not like someone with the word "bunny" in his username? :p: More seriously, I like hip hop's attitude of sharing his opinions even if they aren't liked by all) Most Obscure Music Taste: Urban Hatemonger ? (Except for never listening to classical music, Urban seems to have the most diverse taste in music of anyone I've noticed on MB. Some of his preferred music I like, while some of it I absolutely hate...but it is always interesting) Best Music Taste: Biggest Music Nerd: Unknown Solider (I am in awe of his vast knowledge of metal music that enables him to form strong opinions about it. Just one example: http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...ml#post1251020 Best Thread Starter: Pedestrian (She starts massive numbers of threads to involve people in music discussions; thank you, Pedestrian); Vanilla (I enjoy her many threads about thought-provoking topics, especially feminist and personal issues, that encourage the community members to share with each other) Most Missed Poster: adidasss (He logs in but doesn't post! :(); Howard the Duck; ribbons (where are you???) Thread of the Year: WWWP's Member Gallery (Cute, clever, and funny, a lovely gift to the community) Journal of the Year: Trollheart's (He's such an enthusiastic journalist! I'm impressed); Unknown Soldier's Pounding Decibels (Educational and thorough) Moderator of the Year: Conan, Pedestrian, Burning Down (all are frequently friendly and respectful) Best New Member 2012: Rjinn (She involved herself so quickly in conversations that it feels as if she has been here much longer than she has. I enjoy her even-keeled comments); Plankton (He is personable and willing to share both about his life and his music) Member of the Year 2012: Biggest Lounge Lizard: (I'm not sure because I've hardly spent any time in the lounge this year. Amandria?) Member you'd most like to meet in real life: ribbons (My cyber sister, we seem to be living strangely parallel lives with similar outlooks. I'd love to know Liz better and enjoy her beautiful presence in the 3D world); slappyjenkins (He's new here, but his way of writing shows me a sensitive self so similar to mine that I think meeting him would be great fun for both of us); sopsych (Our differences and similarities intrigue me, plus I like trying to get him to smile, so I can imagine that I would enjoy meeting him. I'd like to understand better how he became the person he is) Member you'd most want to avoid meeting in real life: perhaps rostasi (Reason: when this member first joined I felt he seemed very angry, bitter, and nasty sometimes, and so I developed a little fear of him); loathsome pete (Pete seems completely indifferent to me and his aggressive outbursts freak me out, so I think neither he nor I would enjoy meeting in person...but if he ever wants to meet, I'm still game, because then he'll find out we have even less in common than he thinks. ;)) Biggest Wanna-Be Moderator: Trollheart (and I think you'd be good at it, too, because I know how much you care about people and want to come to their defense) Most amusing Shoutboxer: Hermione (All I know is that she is down there a lot, so I suspect she and others are having fun together) |
Aggressive outbursts from LoathsomePete? I've always seen comments like the ones quoted above as simply wideass humor. He's one of the most levelheaded people on MB imo.
Edit: I mean "wiseass humor". That typo is way too hilarious to edit though. |

I don't subscribe to the idea of "character," Urban, so I don't judge people's "characters." All people get upset and angry sometimes, especially when they have been treated disrespectfully such as by being called a troll when they are not, and having their thread titles changed without their permission by unfriendly mods. Your comment, "You never really were a good judge of character were you," is a great example of all-or-nothing thinking and mocking behavior. |

Urban, I don't mean to retrospectively earn a spot in the "Biggest Drama Whore" category for your nominations, but I feel I have to defend my journal.
Your comment about every journal being "long-winded album reviews" or short one-liners with youtubes is hardly applicable in my case. Actually, the first is certainly applicable (guilty!) and maybe the second but NOT ONLY those! I go to immense lengths to do different and interesting things in my journal, of which the below are only a few, and I am always looking for new slants and ideas to keep readers interested. There can be nothing as boring as album review after album review for some people, which is why I try to keep it fresh and new. "More than words" --- an essay on a song whose lyrics I really like or rate, and a bit about the songwriter. "Secret life of the album cover" --- where I dissect an album sleeve and talk about its art as related to the album "Gone solo in the game" --- looking at the solo career of an artiste who has left their band "Eurovision Hell" --- Poking fun at the Eurovision Song Contest "Stranger in a strange land" --- Where I try to broaden my musical tastes or appreciation of genres I know little of. Last year was boybands, this year coming, perhaps, jazz... "The Meat Grinder" --- In which I select a random metal band and talk about them, looking at their work and advising what I think of them These are only a very few small examples of the ways in which I have tried to stand out from the crowd and be different, do something original with my journal and not take the path of least resistance. And it must be working, with almost 80,000 views --- the most I can see any journal having to date --- and my journal being voted for here several times as Journal of the Year, for which I thank those who voted. But it's not just me, in case you or anyone else thinks this is a "look at me!" post. It's not. Unknown Soldier has put trojan work into his journal, Mankycaant, although he has only just started, already has a journal shaping up to be one to watch, and of course Janszoon's journals, no matter what they are, are always interesting and innovative, especially "25 albums..." So how you can say no-one is being original in what they write in their journal is beyond me. I think credit where credit is due; we're all working hard to make our journals interesting and fun to read, and comments like yours, while possibly made offhand, don't help. |
I think you're taking my comments way out of context.
I didn't say everything was bad, I said I don't think anybody stood out. And I stand by that. You are right, Unknown Soldier's journal is very interesting and I hope he continues it. But do I think it stands head & shoulders above what yourself or Janzsoon or anybody else is doing? Not really, which is why I didn't vote for it. You may notice that I did give Unknown Soldier credit for posting a lot more these days elsewhere in the awards and a part of that was him doing what he is currently doing with his journal. Most people pick a formula and stick to it, which is fine but personally that style of writing doesn't really do a lot for me. I voted Pedestian's journal as the best one. Go take a look at. It's not about just one thing, you never know what or how she's going to write next. That's the sort of thing I'd like to see more of which is why I said I hoped to see more originality in peoples writing. It would be nice if people mixed things up a bit. I don't want to pick apart your journal because I know you work your ass off on that thing. I know you have a wide range of subjects you write about, but when it comes down to it they can all be pretty much narrowed down to you talking about the music you've heard. Which is fine but it's only a small part of it. Here's a challenge for you, write a journal piece called My First Gig. Tell us about the first gig you went to, tell us who you saw, why you chose to see that band before any other bands, the circumstances of you going, where was it, what did you do before the gig, what did you do after the gig, who did you go with, what happened to those people, do you still see them....... That's just one example of mixing things up and not just writing about one thing out of possibly thousands, and that's the type of thing I'd be more likely to enjoy and give credit for. |
I appreciate your reply, and as I said I wasn't just pushing my own journal, but a general catch-all complaint/comment like "some more originality, people" is I feel overall very demeaning if not insulting to all the hard work people put in on their journals. It's not easy as of course you know: I think your own (when you update it) is also very good, but your contention that "it's all about music" is a bit odd, as this is Music Banter and these are journals which most people would expect to be based around music.
I mean, I could very easily write something about my cats, or aircraft spotting, or science-fiction, but I don't really think that would have too much in the way of interest to people here, who mostly come here for music. And have you actually read my "Stranger in a strange land" feature? It's more like a mini-novel/travelogue, certainly not just album reviews. AND on a genre I intensely dislike, too. It's difficult to shake things up and be a little different, which is what I try to do as much as I can --- even adding the "Series Link" section, which is in no way related to music, just TV I watch, though I suppose you could say it's still media-based --- to keep things interesting. It may not be your thing, and that's fine, but I still think your comment was missplaced and yeah, pretty insulting, though it probably wasn't meant as such: I know you don't really give a **** about journals, which is why I would have preferred you said nothing, but then that's your opinion, this is mine. I feel people just get credit for their work, is all. As for your challenge? Meh, I'm 50 next year and my memory is not great (what was your name again, sonny?) so I couldn't even remember what my first gig was --- maybe Rory Gallagher or Mama's Boys at the SFX in Dublin, though it could as easily have been Marillion there --- I know you will probably say everyone remembers their first gig, but I don't. Might even have been Barry Manilow or Richard Clayderman or Elkie Brooks, three gigs I treated my mam to. My memory is not great, and besides that, my memory is not great. This isn't too bad until you factor in the fact that my memory is not great, and then ... what was I talking about? I forget... :D Anyway, if you're bothered, I DID write an account of a gig I went to, one of my icons at the time (and still), with the whole leadup and everything, which you can find here http://www.trollheart.com/dubangi.html if you so wish (sorry for the rather harsh colour scheme...) At the time I wrote as Lestat, in case you're wondering, before the movie got everyone and his brother calling themselves that and I had to change it. Oh, and thanks for recognising how much work I put into my journal, as I'm sure everyone else does in theirs. It's not easy, but it is fun and it's something I very much enjoy. Not everyone will like it, but then, that's how things are and I wouldn't expect that. As long as someone enjoys it and reads it, I'll keep writing. So no sneaky delaying of my updates! |
Holy hell. When we've reached the "Giant Block of Text" stage of the discussion, I think it's about time to take it out behind the barn and put it out of it's misery.
