Nope it's a federal thing, however states have to meet or exceed the federal governments standards, thus places like SF are breaking not just state law but federal law.

Once again for all you law know-it-alls, in California the defenition of marriage in California's State Constitution is "The binding of unity between a man and a woman." No state amendment was made to the State Constitution, so really they were breaking their own laws. It is a federal thing if the fed's want it to be, they have the power.

Wasn't trying to come off as arrogant, but whatever.

Anyways, from my understanding in Massachusetts the marriage can only be legal if it would be valid in every state...

Often people use the term "Marriage is an institution between one man and one woman"

It is easily the weakest. Who says who marriage is to be defined by? It seems to me that if the straight community cannot show a good reason to deny the institution of marriage to *** people, it shouldn't be denied. And such simple, nebulous declarations are hardly a good reason. They're really more like an expression of prejudce than any kind of a real argument. The concept of not denying people their rights unless you can show a good reason to do so is the very basis of the American ideal of human rights.

Just my, and some other peoples opinions

Here's a thought; let's stop labeling music and fighting over what genre a certain band is, and start listening to whatever pleases our ears no matter what anyone thinks of it! ;)

When a State Constitution puts that as a defenition, unless the State's constitution is changed then it would be illegal for marriage. National Government is supreme to everything in America. It doesn't matter what a state does. That's why you don't see the states taxing the national government. It's called Federalism, or your goverment if you live in the US. So the national government has an important decision to make.
