The SLANG Thread.

I'm Scottish therefore about 85% of my vocabulary is slang :laughing:.

I'm always interested in learning slang from other countries, so this can be a place we share them!

I shall start :).

First of all I will start with some pretty simple stuff...

AYE - used instead of yes.

NAW - used instead of no.

BALTIC (ball-tick) - used when its freezing outside.

BOAK (bow-k) - to heave.

FEART (fe-ir-t) - to be scared.

SKELP - to hit someone.

JESSIE - to be a wimp.

SKINT - having no money (story of my life! My family say I should get "am skint" tattooed on me I say it that often)

HACKIT - ugly

BREEKS - trousers

And that's all I can think of.

We also say words in the wrong context, for instance;

I would say "How does that happen?" Instead of saying "why does that happen?" :)

Bostin' - Not really sure what this means, I think it's Brummie for something good. "It's bostin".

Gambole - This is a word for a front roll. I've never heard anyone else say it.

Cob - Bread roll.

Tot - Alcoholic drink or drinks.

Cotch - To relax or a place where you relax.

Deffed me off - Never heard anyone from anywhere else say this, but it means to leave someone somewhere "they deffed me off last night".

Wait, is that a verb or a noun?

No idea, I would say "Batlord, you're a fucking Jessie if you don't sink that pint"

Getting used to the slang in the south eastern US was a process for me.

Fixing= intending; wanting to do something

"Coke"= Any soft drink.

"Bless Your Heart"= anywhere between "I am so sorry for you" and a polite form of "you're an abomination." I'm still trying to comprehend the scope of this phrase.

There's also the tendency to drop the consonant and the "to" in infinitive verbs.
Ex: "Gon'" is "going to". As in "I'm gon' drive this here truck up to Pigeon Forge."
EDIT: That reminds me, "here" often gets added superfluously directly before nouns.

There's tons more, but I can't think of them at the moment. Will post more later.
