Has Music Banter got less cool?

When I first joined most people seemed to be listening to neat little indie bands, pretty cool hip-hop and the 'classic' albums we discussed were usually from the 90's at earliest. I thought most people listened to pretty cool music.

Granted, new members have joined, old members left. But...

Now, the majority of users seem to lean towards AOR and dad rock. Too much discussion about early prog rock, the big four of metal and other uncool bands.
Y'all sounding like you're 40 and wearing 20 year old band shirts to keep up with the kids.
Plus there's been an alarming rise in dumb pop fanatics. Seriously guys, Iggy Azaela? She's whiter than this post.

Where's all the cool music at? Have you got less cool over the last three years.
Discuss.

Spoiler: I think you have.

The Batlord 06-07-2014 11:31 AM

Yes. A site populated by socially-challenged nerds talking about things that nobody else on Earth gives even the smallest flying **** about has become less cool.

Janszoon 06-07-2014 12:00 PM

I would say there was way more discussion of 60s/70s rock during my first few years here than there is now. There was also hardly any hip-hop discussion when I first joined.

Black Francis 06-07-2014 12:26 PM

For me personally it has gotten cooler, im more used to ppl's personalities and taste and i have met a couple members with a similar taste to mine.

i have to agree though that most of the outspoken members are into progressive rock or metal which sadly im not really into, i mean i like a couple of bands here or there but it's not my genre of choice.

Apart from the pixies which alot of ppl here reference, my fav bands don't get mentioned alot and there is no active discussions on their threads so it seems pointless to talk about them sometimes (at least in my case) that's why i mostly use the lounge to socialise or music threads that don't focus on a single artist and you can talk about different ones at any point in the thread.

Who are some of your favorite bands aside from the Pixies?

Exo 06-07-2014 12:46 PM

We have a music section?

It's just littered with album covers and one line about an album.

Mostly posted by myself.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. Getting to know the site and members has made my experience here much better, and I really like plugging. Member journals are a great way to learn about artists/genres I'm not well versed in too. I'm not sure I bring much to the table in return though, since my musical tastes are pretty generic and I'm not all that knowledgeable - it's like MB is the extremely hot person in a couple and I'm the one dating way out of my league.

Paul Smeenus 06-07-2014 01:01 PM

I'm really sorry you don't like my music, Manky. I've worked really hard on the two catalog reviews I linked to in my sigfile because I'm passionate about the music. One artist is from the '70's, the other is from '04-'11 so I'm not just living in my past. I will be working on more but I'm afraid that none of them are likely to qualify as "cool". Apologies in advance.

Aside from them im a big fan of Deerhoof, Of montreal, Guided by voices, The misfits, the stranglers, Sonic youth, the violent femmes, They might be giants, etc

i know alot of ppl like them but there is not alot of talk about them and i don't bring them up cause they feel played out, idk why but i assume either ppl already know them and are sick of them already or they are simply not interested in them because i don't see them bringing them up, ya know?

I have to admit though, my knowledge in music is pretty limited i like alot of bands by individual songs but i don't seek out all their cds cause i don't like them THAT much, i only know the history of the bands i REALLY like, others i don't know enough to get into a serious discussion about them.

Which ones do you like? i only know you like the talking heads.

Sockface 06-07-2014 01:11 PM

Wait... so you're that one mythical guy who holds the power to decide what is cool? Cool.

This guy is from Iceland so I'm going to venture a guess he knows what the hell he's talking about when he talks about mythical creatures.

Thanks, I really love it when I get called a guy on the internet. It makes me feel sneaky, and sometimes the people saying it sound so convincing they almost fool me.

...Oh wait, my secret is out now. Darn.

(btw I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I sincerely love being mistaken for a guy, thank you, you're awesome!)

Sparky 06-07-2014 02:12 PM

music banter collective is very self conscious as a whole

threads like this reoccur at least once a year

granted there hasn't been much to talk about musically, I'd argue that's because, at least imo there hasn't been any great releases in a couple months now

Just saw these guys earlier in the week and they are one of my top 5 live bands of all time. Dont understand why more people are not talking about them.

Yeah that was surprising.

Sounds cliche but at the age of 46 the idea of cool loses all relevance.

Ikr?

though i get why it's not for everybody, GBV is not the best produced band, i think they're one of those bands who loose their indie charm when their music is too studio polished, they're better raw and in lo-fi, their music fits into that better.

it's also a very mellow and melodic band, They don't have alot edge they could be perceived as kind of bland some ppl have said that to me actually, i guess they don't hear that something special we hear in them.

James 06-07-2014 04:26 PM

Yes but eventually we will go full circle. So uncool we're ironically cool.

Very true. There's always been lots of progheads.

Cool people listen to LIZ. Me and Deej are the only cool people on here to my knowledge.

'Cool proghead' is the ultimate oxymoron.

truer words have never been spoken, such a thing is as common as a person who listens to d-beat having a wash more than once every 2.5 yrs

Goofle 06-07-2014 04:53 PM

LIZ > MIA

Not even kiddin'.

Alfred 06-07-2014 04:55 PM

This post is going to sound terrible but it's the truth. I stopped coming here because a very small fraction of the board actually wants to discuss the music I enjoy (which is predominently punk, emo, indie, and metal released within my lifetime), while I have found another, faster-paced music board (that shall not be named) that most often discusses the music I like. This board also allows me to brutally and anonymously flame users at my discretion, which can be hilariously entertaining and keeps people honest.

I still love MB though and I owe it so much

What MB needs is a jazzy new banner. Just screams dad rock. Give us something with glowsticks and post dubstep.

Yeah, you have no idea how much hard rock was discussed when I joined. It dominated the boards in a way that no forum has since on MB.

DwnWthVwls 06-07-2014 05:57 PM

I posted quite a bit when I first joined.. Than I realized I'm not a fan of the music forums; it's lacking discussion, and very few people share music. I forget who pointed it out but to summarize: "Most of the people here have known each other for years and know what each other are into. So now it's just a place where we hang out and talk. If you want to share music and interact with members about music go to the plug".

And that's exactly what I did! I have enjoyed plugging with quite a few members, I know nothing about them except what they like in music and they have already shown me many songs that I consider grab worthy.

The general forums are cool and I do enjoy some of the banter and silly forum games, but I came here for music. Getting to know new people is just a plus(minus depending).

TheBig3 06-07-2014 05:58 PM

Also, plug is where we discuss most stuff these days.

Black Francis 06-07-2014 06:09 PM

I can't use that Plug dj thing, it sucks to miss out on that

Goofle 06-07-2014 06:12 PM

Why not?

Paedantic Basterd 06-07-2014 06:14 PM

MB has probably changed a little, but I think I've changed a lot. I don't know if it's become less cool, but I do feel like I've grown apart from it, and like it no longer really fulfills my needs. I feel much more directionless when I logon.

Black Francis 06-07-2014 06:16 PM

I don't own a Pc or a laptop i use my Ps3 and it doesn't work on certain sites.

I have a tablet but idk if that works there.
