Say it loud, say it proud ... I'm a Nerd!

Who here will confess to being a Nerd? They used to get a really bad rap, but a programme I watched recently reminded me that without Nerds we would not have the massive advances we have today in the fields of computer technology, mobile phones and so much more. In a very real way, Nerds make the world go round.

So who will stand with me? I've been a Nerd forever: into comics, computers, sci-fi etc. I'm dorky (even though the inestimable Professor Frink postulates that Nerd stands for Not Even Remotely Dorky!) and while not exactly awkward with girls I'm not quite fighting them off with a stick either! I'm the one my neighbours call when their computers, TVs or whatever aren't working (the poor fools!) :D and I spend way more time on my computer than I do in the fresh air. I attach a lot more significance to TV programmes than I probably should, and I play no sports and have the kind of body a stick insect would be envious of.

And I love being a Nerd!

So who else will testify? It's not like the old days: the stock image of the geeky teenage boy covered in acne with his home science kit or homebuilt computer has been long erased from Mankind's consciousness --- sort of --- ladies can now be Nerds too, so don't be shy girls!

One of us, one of us, one of us... ;)

Have a small comic book collection.

Favorite author is Heinlein.

Build my own stereo's.

Build my own PC's.

Had every gaming console since the debut of Pong.

IT/CAD Manager.

(defun C:NerdStat (yes no)

)

My God... I never actually thought about it. I. Am. A. Nerd.

But, I can still rock:

LoathsomePete 09-03-2014 09:31 AM

Can't I just be a guy that likes nerdy things?

RoxyRollah 09-03-2014 09:32 AM

^You mean a, NERD!

Plankton 09-03-2014 09:33 AM

Nerds are people too.

No.

DwnWthVwls 09-03-2014 11:28 AM

I think when people here nerd they think Urkel type personalties. I like nerdy/geeky things but I definitely do not fit the cliche. I never really enjoyed going to Friday Night Magic because I didn't like the other people there.

My nerdiness does not extend beyond gaming: Board Games/TCGs/MMORPGs.

Wpnfire 09-03-2014 12:09 PM

Two sets, each with three books, and I read all but two of them. The Fall of Reach, Ghosts of Onyx, and maybe First Strike are three of the most entertaining books I've ever read.

Dude, did you change your name? Only recognized your signature, haha. What happened to your avatar?

The Batlord 09-03-2014 02:55 PM

^^^

Who is he? I have no idea.

Yesterday I spent the better part of an hour programming a calender on my computer with my fall TV schedule. I will now be alerted an hour and then ten minutes before any show I want to watch. In my defense, I could have been watching a show for months, but when the day comes I still end up saying, "What's on TV tonight?" Still, non-nerds don't do that.

Yeah I changed my entire profile basically. I wanted to change my avatar but I couldn't think of anything, so I'm copying Fred and going without it.

Trollheart 09-03-2014 03:09 PM

I guess he's WpnFire, yeah?

Neapolitan 09-03-2014 04:14 PM

I reluctantly voted "Yes, and ashamed of it" ... I wanted to vote "No way man!" but I didn't want to be call out on it, and be known as a liar. I guess it's about time to admit to my nerdiness... oh yeah http://www.messentools.com/images/em...rutas-nerd.gif

One of my favorite quotes is about what a nerd is, it comes from something I heard on TV, - I forget where, maybe it was from Bones. I can never remember things verbatim so forgive me if I paraphrased it:

Quote:

"A nerd is someone who cares enough to know the things other people don't."

DwnWthVwls 09-03-2014 04:17 PM

You like old synth music you couldn't deny it if you tried.. :D

I like that quote.

Necromancer 09-03-2014 04:24 PM

I thought it was cool to listen to it, but on the other-hand playing it is debatable:

sorry nope I aint no nerd

Scarlett O'Hara 09-03-2014 05:06 PM

I don't look like a nerd but I really am. I live on computers from the time I wake up till the time I go to sleep. I'm a huge sci fi fan and love PC gaming (have like 20-30 games). I'm doing IT as well, I think you have to be somewhat nerdy to get into that industry.

I really don't feel like I nerd, I'm into a lot of weird things, but for the most part I hate nerd fandoms. I'm not a nerd, I'm a weirdo and proud of it.

The Batlord 09-03-2014 05:20 PM

Anyone on this site who denies being a nerd is just a self-hating nerd.

I've tried programming, D&D, tried homestuck when my friends wouldn't shut up about it, my interest in games have declined so much so that I would rather read a book. I'm just really, really, really bored by everything associated with nerd culture.

To be honest, I'm more into reading about people eating each other for power in Liberia than Doctor Who.

I've made almost 20,000 posts blathering about music on an internet forum which I have also moderated for half a decade. Obviously I can't possibly be a nerd.

In my life "nerd" is more of a verb than an identity.

Sometimes I'd rather play videogames and read comics than go out drinking and skating.

Hey, I understand. Sometimes that last boss just gets under your skin and the bottle starts calling to you.

ladyislingering 09-03-2014 11:33 PM

Nerds are generally cool people.

They know a lot about a lot. But if they know a lot about a little, they probably have Asperger's.
