If learning more about the Star Trek universe means having to endure the dull space politics and space religion that made up so much of DS9, then I'd rather know a whole lot less about that universe.

The only comparison that can really be made to DS9 is Babylon 5. I’ve only seen about one and half seasons of Babylon 5, but the use of the one room location is massive between the two series. Both have more or less the same concept, but Babylon 5 feels like a proper space station that is the melting pot for different races in the galaxy, whereas DS9 feels like a friggin petrol station in space with a conference room, a mall with a couple of shops.

Definitely missing the point, and also totally wrong. Wasn't it DS9 that had the first major --- and I mean major, not Wolf 359 --- space war in Star Trek? With six or more races involved and a whole new way of fighting? Admittedly, things were a little restricted with all the action being mostly on the station --- which is probably why they brought in "Defiant", which I think was a bad move; showed that the writers or network had decided that a sci-fi series could not survive without a spaceship in it, something proven totally wrong by B5 ---but it never felt like "one room" to me. It didn't feel as expansive as B5, sure, but I think they did well enough with what they got. As I mentioned earlier, even with holosuites --- which would or could have given the writers an out --- they didn't overuse, even use these much at all.

The politics and religious themes were what helped mark DS9 out from other major sci-fi series, and contributed much to the overall story arcs. Mind you, I did want to punch out the "prophets" on more than one occasion. As for Kira! And then there was Veddek, later Kai Win...

Babylon 5 really got it right. If you were to put the two series up against each other --- NO! I have too much work! Really! I do... Although ... NO, No and no! --- I feel B5 would ace DS9 in most areas.

Can we also please be clear: Batty and I are NOT comparing Voyager to DS9, or even NexGen, as he said, correctly, the former would come off the worst. We are making our arguments and putting forward our points for why the series was, or was not, a good one.
