Awful idea.

This is supposed to be based on what people have posted over the last year, not make comments about peoples personalities.
This stuff is exactly why the Spill Your Guts thread exists.

@Lisnaholic: that's sort of what I had in mind. Was just gonna use the most recent category list and then add some that fit. The plug category is a good idea.

@The Batlord: I like your idea on voting. Sort of what I had in mind with the elimination round.

Very happy to see everyone getting involved and participating. I'll give it a few days so everyone has a chance of being heard in terms of what they want to see and categories they like. We may be able to get this going earlier than expected and that's always a nice thing.

^ Thinking about it, Urban makes a good point, though I´m not sure how easy it is to separate posting from personality. For instance people enjoy using categories like Most Like To Meet and Sexiest Member, etc.

On the other hand, we never have an award for Ugliest Member because we all know that would be cruel. It´s ok to elect someone as Inane or Worst Debater though. So what are the criteria here? Perhaps we should be considering the thorny question of eliminating all the negative awards, which have caused some probs in the past. It would mean sacrificing a bit of fun in order to avoid any hurt. I´m inclined to think it´s a price worth paying TBH

Also, unless it´s absolutely clear that it´s a joke, the award of Biggest Troll, is hardly designed to discourage trolling, is it?

you have to have most like to meet.....it's the only award i ever win :)

Not to glorify the former members who behaved trollishly and got prema-banned for it, we should lock in The Batlord for Biggest Troll of the Year.

That's why I said "best" troll. There are definitely some members who know how and when to troll without ruining threads, as opposed to Batlord's sh*t-talk/sarcasm which is just part of his personality. Not discrediting him for the award though, he has done his fair share of "good" trolling since I've been here.

Key 11-02-2014 11:42 AM

To sort of go back to categories discussion, I do like the old lists and they have served very well for these awards which is why i'm using them, I mostly wanted ideas for categories that could be added to the pre-existing list so that we are able to make it more interesting for those that have never really been involved in one of these before. That way it's not just a mirror version of the previous years. I just figured it'd be nice to change it up a little bit.

I've seen some awesome categories that people have suggested that I will be more than happy to implement. As for the avatar categories, I think having the "Best avatar" category does it's work just fine. If there's some disagreement on that, I'll be happy to change it.

TheBig3 11-02-2014 11:55 AM

I like the idea of a Best Thread of the Year award. The awards have always been half goofy, half serious, but we could use some more "keeping the site going" awards.

How about best spins in plug category?

When people vote for this, they should say the one they're referring to. People change avatars a lot. And having something to go off of (imo) helps me vote.

Yep, i'm definitely down to put more site related awards, as i've always found that there always been a focus on more goofy. Nothing wrong with goofy, but too much can be too much.

Only thing i'm worried about with the plug.dj category is the amount of people that would be included, as I know we don't have a very large community of people that use plug.dj. But hey, i'll put it in and if it works, it works.

Valid point, but the converse would be: lets get more people in plug. I think its one of the best things we've done as a site in a long time. its about music, we all get to hear stuff we haven't before, and you know the music preferences of the people you're talking to.

In some way, to me, plug is more to the point of the site than the site itself.

Completely agree on most parts, I just wish I had more time to plug with you guys, because it always seems to be a great time. And I think having an award for it would be a good way to give it the attention it deserves since I also agree that it really has brought a lot of members closer together.

To be honest, I think the category of Biggest/Best Troll can't be won through a popularity contest (which my winning would clearly be). Any troll worth being called a troll has been banned. So, as far as I'm concerned Dirty/butthead is the only real contestant this year.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-02-2014 12:36 PM

Yeah and then the twat comes back again and makes another 200 accounts.

For the love of God can we stop giving this guy so much attention and then wonder why he keeps coming back over and over again. This is like the 3rd conversation I've seen about him in 2 days.

The Batlord 11-02-2014 12:37 PM

Oh, one good category would be Best Journal Post. Unknown Soldier has swept the Best Journal award for the last three or four years, but he never deviates from a formula (which is the point though), and it'd be nice to highlight some posts that are more individual and creative.

Well, that's kind of why he's the Biggest/Best Troll of the Year. If you don't want to honor somebody then it makes sense to not have the award in the first place. As nice as it is to get an award, it wouldn't really make sense to give it to somebody who doesn't really qualify as a troll.

I second this.

DwnWthVwls 11-02-2014 12:51 PM

If you read my description of troll you would quickly realize I didn't mean the idiots who've been banned. I was thinking more along the lines of members like you, Nea, Janz, etc who insert witty humor at the appropriate time which somehow enhances the thread while being completely off topic. If you have a better word than troll for that by all means use it.

Urban do you seriously get upset if people talk about him? I've never heard anyone say anything positive about him and you react as if he's getting applauded. Present and past controversy is bound to create some discussion from time to time, no sense getting pissy over it.

Plugging with people is way better than the forums, I wish more people would hop in.

Instead of a Best Troll award, why don't we have an award along the lines of being witty or something like that. I'm personally not a fan of the Best Troll award because evidently, it brings up members that I honestly am getting tired of hearing about. Dirty/Butthead is and will never be funny or in any way worthy of talking about. But Urban is right, there have been multiple threads where he has been brought up and i'm also confused as to why that is. This is one of the threads that I'd prefer not to see his name included as I don't think he's worthy of any awards. Unless we have a Ban of the Year award.

I'm definitely ok with this, but I fear that it would just be people's own Journal posts that they find are considered the best. It'd be difficult to narrow it down to just one post.

Well it's not only a problem of voting for yourself, but people will choose posts from other journals and it just seems like it'd be a scattered mess of individual posts. Just seems like it'd be rather difficult to expect people to narrow it down to one individual post when having to choose out of hundreds of them.

Well that's where a minimum of two nominations comes in. If you're nominating a post you should be required to post or at least link to that entry, so hopefully it would be easier to get a second.

I do think it'd work out, but even with a minimum of 2 posts, we'd still be dealing with a long list of posts we'd have to choose from at the end, unless you were thinking we could do an elimination round with just that one category and the one post with the most votes wins the award. If there was a way to narrow it down from the get go, like only being able to choose from journals that are updated on a semi frequent basis and not just any journal, I think it'd work out.

Trollheart 11-02-2014 01:37 PM

How about something like "Best series post"? Like Batty had the juggalo thing, also his Return of the Kings of Metal, Wpnfire has this map of riffage or whatever (sorry I've only been darting in and out of the journals recently), you have why cover this? etc. Something like that; something that is an ongoing or was an ongoing series of posts rather than just one?

That would certainly make things a lot easier. With all the tallying that goes into this at the end, having a bunch of posts for one category to sort through would be like doing the tallying twice. Anything to make that easier is definitely better. We have plenty of time to think of something but I do like the idea of highlighting people's Journal posts as they have been getting increasingly better over time and more people have been going out of their comfort zone to make a journal.

Trollheart 11-02-2014 01:43 PM

By the way, I know Vanilla had Exo help her with the counts (I said COUNTS!) last time, I think, so if you need a hand when it comes down to tallying up, give me a shout ok?

Or if I can help in any other way.

Your help would be much appreciated at that time, and I will keep that in mind if I run into any issue before-hand. Things seem to be going smoothly and although I haven't really sorted out a category list, I have an idea of which ones will be included in the default list that's been used for years.

A member specific award isn't the greatest idea because it doesn't really leave much area for competition. I do think it's good in theory, but default winners aren't always fun or fair.

A journal series award is a great idea. Little beats the thrill of seeing a new post appear in a thread with a feature you've been following, and knowing the post will be the latest awesome installment!

An interesting humorous award would be "Ninja Poster of the Year". Someone who sneaks in their replies and causes consternation and editing.
