Might want to consider SCUBA lessons. It teaches you how to equalize your ears.

It's one thing for someone to explain how to do a valsalva maneuver (or whatever your preferred technique is), but in this case practice very definitely makes perfect.

Usually scuba lessons are done in a pool in the shallow area. Its main purpose is to teach the breathing and equalizing of the ears. I usually just chew bubble gum on the plane and never suffer the ear pop.
