I can't think of very many instances where menial labor is pointless. Doing boring tedious bull**** is necessary for all species to live. Hey squirrels, stop collecting those nuts! Beavers, stop gnawing those trees! It's pointless, I tell ya, just bitch until something happens OR if youre religious pray until the food appears.

I think we should all convert to breatharians and just thrive without having to work.

I've heard mixed things about automation, though I doubt any of those arguments would be convincing considering your general view on how society should be set up. As for the latter, I mostly agree in that the workers performing the tasks should not be held under threat of starvation, but someone has to do it and I don't see any reason to force overqualified people in to menial tasks for the sake of fairness. That's counter productive.

Not really.

as much as I may be accused of elitism, I think it's a special kind of negative outlook on humanity to not observe that people are much smarter than their job generally allows them to be

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness,
starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking
for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly
connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking
in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating
across the tops of cities contemplating jazz.

it is however super convenient to believe that people who occupy these jobs must do so because they aren't as intelligent or moral as someone who does not

Why would I rent my intellect out to the entrepreneurial class?

You always get sucked into thinking like a future republican.

You’re smart. Use your brains to destroy this ****hole.

I think there is a spectrum and a multitude of factors that result in overqualified people performing menial tasks, but in most cases they are probably there because that's the effort they've put into it. I guess you haven't worked jobs where people can't even put stuff in the right place or take an order correctly or follow directions. I don't think those people are necessarily unintelligent or whatever but when you screw things up like that it begs the question of how qualified they would be for something less menial. Demonstrating competence, problem solving, and a willingness to take initiative is not as common as you make it out to be and arguably necessary (rather you agree with it or not).

Lots of underqualified people in positions they shouldn't have via nepotism or networking, that's a problem too.

Because it allows you to use your intelligence in a meaningful way? At least that's why I do it. I get to use my skills to clean up environmental disasters and that makes me happy and is one part of making my life meaningful.

Having my mind engaged is republican for renting out my intellect.
