Super weird day.

As a first-time homeowner, I'm now responsible for this green bit of land both in front of and behind my domicile. Sadly, I'm daft at physical labor and would kill myself trying to tame mother nature with a gas-powered death machine.

So today, I hired a dude (my age) to mow and edge my property. He's a single dad recently rewarded custody of his daughter, and he's looking to make some money on weekends to provide for her. He does good work and offered a fair price to come by every two weeks.

Regardless of circumstance, it's strange to be in a position where I'm paying other people to maintain my property.

Adulting is weird.

The alternative is to mow your own lawn. Shut up and be thankful you can employ others to do it for you. Mowing sucks balls.

You should eventually consider growing ground covers and low-maintenance native plants in the stead of grass. You can make a self-sustaining ecosystem this way on your plot . Also a "rain garden" will further redirect rain overflow away from your house's foundation and prevent runoff into the sewers.

Thanks Chelsea! That's precisely what we had in mind. My fiance plans to grow veggies in the back yard once she can rework the soil to something remotely rich in nutrients. As for the front she's planning for wildflowers, self-sustaining plants like you described, and she's wild about moss.

We're teaming up with gutterpunk and hippie commune folk in our village to show us the ropes and then, hopefully, mowing will be less of an issue.

Be sure to make raised beds for vegetables (you can used recycled materials to lower cost)... Annuals (except for native wild flowers perhaps) tend to do better in a well-composted raised bed. You're so lucky about your local resources! We live in the South where most farms are still using the monocropping method, so we are going this journey alone.
