It's a pretty depressing analysis of life at the low end of the wage scale, tbh.

To work or not to work? My ten cents:-

Some jobs are soul-destroying and leave so little time for job searching that you almost need to quit the job you have so you can start looking for something better. The problem is that if you then don't find anything, you can be truly screwed. I once experienced a period of unemployment and was shocked at how fast my money and my sense of professional worth evapourated. I also learned that, at interview, you are so much stronger going from one job to another. If you're unemployed, they know you are basically begging before you walk in the door. (Perhaps Trollheart will remember Yosser Hughes at his heart-wrenching, "Gi' s a job" interview.)

On balance, I think my advice to Occult H would be to stick at it but try really hard to find something better...Sorry that you're in such an unpleasant situation.
Ah yes, poor Yosser. Confessional to the priest: "I'm desperate, father." Priest: "Call me Dan". Yosser: "I'm desperate, Dan." One of the best series ever written. Bleasdale is a genius.

Yeah it is crazy but most people are programmed to think that it is their only option. Get a job working for someone else and stick to it no matter what while they have control over your life.

I came in to say this pretty much. I hated the feeling of being stuck in the rat race like everyone else and having bosses that completely disrespected you and you couldn't do much about it because bills still need to be paid and you need to eat. The best option is to become your own boss and find some way to become self employed.

There is a sense of freedom being able to create your own hours and wake up when you are ready not when you HAVE to just to slave away for someone else that signs your checks.

^ Real LOL ! That's a brilliant bit of dialogue, which I didn't remember - but then I missed a lot of episodes during the original showing. At the time I had, what are those things called?, oh yeah, a social life.

I've heard of them, but I did have to look the phrase up on Wikipedia.

Still, in all seriousness, ****ing heartbreaking.

Do you know, I couldn't even watch it. Gut-wrenching. What a powerhouse performance from Bernard Hill.
