Because every single child in the classroom is going to get every single question right, 100% of the time.

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.

I don't see what's wrong with that advice. If you don't know then I agree at least put something down.

Because you're supposed to know. It's supposed to assess what you learned not your ability to take random guesses.

Answering every question on a test with random guesses is extremely unlikely to give you a decent result.

If there is a pass mark to get into a better school or whatever then yes put something down.

Believe it or not it used to be common for teachers to penalize guessing on multiple choice. I guess their logic was if you had a 25% of getting credit for something you don’t know then that should be countered by deducting more for an incorrect guess than just leaving it blank. I don’t think they do this anymore (maybe they do on college entrance and certification exams) but they would also give one choice that was ridiculous and penalized you extra if you plchose that one.

I actually appreciate what Lucem is saying. While it’s not a great test taking strategy it does communicate that (maybe) he knows he doesn’t know. When kids wrote “I don’t know” next to a problem I could respect that. It’s in my past anyway. I’m putting this ****ty chapter behind me.

**** teaching. **** school. Every school in America should be razed. **** the entire system.

It doesn’t sound like you give a **** but if you know the answers are scrambled by a computer the best way to guarantee you take advantage of the full 25% for random guesses is choose the first choice that you haven’t eliminated every time. Unless you have an uncanny knack for sniffing out how correct answers are worded your instincts are more than 25% likely to lead you astray. If you were raised in an upper middle class household and you’re a good test taker you can sniff out correct answers on **** you know nothing about just by catching the feel for the syntax of a correct answer. About 15 years ago I was fantastic at that ****. Either they’ve gotten better at disguising it or my senses have dulled.

Same here. And my public high school had classes in various trades that students could take alongside their regular classes.

Then you have to pass the state mandated tests for 10th grade profeciency in math and reading or get a waiver awarded by a small “committee”. Many students end up with a certificate of attendance instead of a diploma. The community colleges take them from the certificate of attendance to an actual diploma. The low level community college classes are just as dysfunctional as high school if not worse. Many teachers are afraid to teach these courses. Sincere students often resent the presence of these students as well since they are often violent criminals who have been court ordered to remain in school until 25.

I taught high school in America for two years. Reading and world history. 11th and 12th grade reading was astonishing. It was like what the **** have you been doing for 12 years. ****ers could barely read Cat in the Hat, no ****. You ask them to name a foreign country and they’ll say Alabama, no lie.
OK thanks for that explanation Occult. That sounds ****ing awful. I'll detail the system here later when I have more time.

The teachers tell you that because it reflects poorly on them and the school if you do horrible on the test. They give you an example, like Occult did, on how to deduct the correct answer (there's always one or two ridiculous ones, so take those out and you got a 50/50 chance) if you didn't actually learn the material. But they always want you to guess for the chance that you get it right so the school doesn't look ****ty. I think this happened with, was it no child left behind? Where they would penalize schools for horrible test results. And you shouldn't have to just guess on any of it. You should know the material enough to give an educated answer rather than some random bull****. So if you knew only half of it, and with the proper knowledge of how to weed out the two ridiculous answers, there is a chance you get a 75% on a test that you only knew 50% of. Them saying that is the best example I could give of teachers not giving a flying **** if you actually learn, they just care about passing you on to the next grade.
