When I was in my early 20s I read bukowski and wanted to be a writer like him but I didn't want to suffer the kind of lifestyle he did so eventually I abandoned it and tried to go for something more practical. I ended up not being a writer but I still suffered the same lifestyle anyway.
If you find something else other than what you had planned at the end of the tunnel, then you adapt. You'll still probably be better off than just meandering stagnantly in dead end jobs.
