I secretly hoped that there was some subtle level on which they're actually really funny, and that I just picked up on it subconsciously.

So it's an actual joke, not a non-joke presented as a joke i.e. anti-humour.

Moth memes are ****ty observational humor (really shallow observations at that) that people try to slather in irony to make it seem funnier when in reality it's on the same level as image macros of the late 2000's.
