I hope you're well back from the river. If it might rise 22 feet by tonight, that's the equivalent of a two-storey building.

Mild flooding of Thames near where I used to live:

I'd like to warn all mothers in London to get their prams off the street.

Lisnaholic 05-01-2019 09:10 AM

^ Yeah, that warning is usually given by the army's emergency response team as they go door to door handing out wellington boots. We're ready for any natural cataclysms in London thanks!

No Macs or brollies to go with the Wellies?

The Batlord 05-01-2019 03:53 PM

Of course they have to hand out the most British thing I have ever heard.

Lisnaholic 05-01-2019 05:43 PM

^ HaHa! They'll give you a brolly, but only if you can show that you have one of the following in your record collection:

- Waterloo Sunset, London Calling or:-

The Batlord 05-01-2019 05:44 PM

Hey, looks like I get a brolly, whatever the **** that is.

Frownland 05-01-2019 05:48 PM

Brolly is prolly just prolly with an English accent.

The Batlord 05-01-2019 05:49 PM

Wasn't he some Dragon Ball Z beefcake?

^ Put the wellies on your feet and hold the brolly over your head and you're good to go. I'm thinking the rainbow wellies for Frownland because, you know, psychedelic.

I can almost smell the revolting low tide Thames stench just looking at that picture.

^ HaHa! And did you notice how disgustingly soft the mud can be? We used to throw stones into it as kids, just for that tingle of revulsion as the stone disappears into a sloppy, collapsing crater.

Two bridges over the river Tees in Northern England:-

In the second bridge, the so-called Big Blue, the yellow box sorry gondola can transport nine cars at a time.

What side of a bridge do suicides jump from? Statistically, they almost invariably go to the downstream side. (Thank you, Netflix series The Break for teaching me that.)

I was in London with a friend, some years ago, and we decided to stop by the Prospect of Whitby for a couple of pints. It was a beautiful, warm summer day so we thought it would be nice to have our drinks out on the back deck, overlooking the Thames. It turned out to be low tide and as soon as we opened the back door to the deck, we spun on our heels and retreated back inside from the foul odor.

And yes, that soft mud looks like it could swallow a person up and suck them under in an instant, never to be seen again.

Lisnaholic 05-13-2019 10:59 AM

^ HaHa! Well, you chose a very popular, very famous pub, and I like the photo you posted. Luckily the smell app on my computer isn't working, otherwise I could scratch and sniff your photo.

As with any riverside city, contamination is worse downstream. London's upstream pubs never had that prob in my experience. Check out your river cities, guys; you should find that for historical reasons, the factories and working-class areas are downstream, elegant residences upstream.

all the skatalites songs kinda sound the same to me but i find them entertaining when taken in small doses.

This incongruous trestle bridge traverses a local park. Freight trains crossing it are several lengths longer than the bridge so can take several minutes to cross it.

Plankton 06-06-2019 09:14 AM

I cross this bridge all the time:

https://chicago.cbslocal.com/2019/03...cal-condition/

Quote:

They found tilted rocker bearings used to help support the bridge, heavily degraded concrete on nearly every support section and serious corrosion at the bridge’s joints.

<snip>

“There’s some permanent deformation,” said Didem Ozevin, a civil engineer at UIC.

Ozevin agreed the report is bad, and said the corrosion and the tilted rocker bearings are the most alarming. So much so that she’d think twice about driving over the bridges.

I have not. If for some reason I don't post on here anymore, that'll be pretty much it then. Roight.

^ They should, but it prob won't happen any time soon. About a month ago a bipartisan meeting to advance infrastructure spending fell apart when Trump walked in and declined to even sit down: he ranted at the Dems for 10 mins then stormed out, and there's been no progress since afaik.

Stocks that would benefit from infrastructure spending fall and hit their lows of the day after President Donald Trump says he won’t make an infrastructure deal while Democrats investigate him.

Plankton 06-19-2019 07:43 AM

I went out there and jumped up and down on it. It's perfectly fine.

Lisnaholic 08-14-2022 07:20 AM

Bumping after three years because I'd like to share this beautiful, what-the-eff-is-going-on, bridge in Sao Paulo, Brazil:-

- also, whatever happened to ziggywas, who was a star contributor to this thread? :(

Trollheart 08-14-2022 10:44 AM

Ziggywas no more? Ziggywas bored? Ziggywas pregnant and now has two kids: Ziggyis and Ziggywillbe? Shrug.
