Though a debate on covid treatment studies spilled over into another thread, covid facts rightly belong in the covid thread, no?

This healthline article, from ten days ago, takes a look at treatments and vaccines currently being explored/used/rejected around the world:-

https://www.healthline.com/health-ne...s-for-covid-19

To me, it's a good idea to see what's going on in other countries, esp for the USA where health policy is getting so politicized. Take a look at the decisions being made by people who are neither Democrats or Republicans.
(In fact, this is an application of a policy that has seen me through my whole life: see what everyone else thinks, and copy them.)

Have been dealing with a COVID outbreak at home. I tested positive on 3rd Sep the day before we were booked in for our first vaccination. Didn't quite make it. My wife has been in hospital since the 13th and has been in an induced coma for the last 10 days on a ventilator. They are doing a tracheotomy today so they can bring her out of sedation but still maintain her oxygen. We are cautiously optimistic at this stage. I think her asthma left her pretty vulnerable to complications but she seems to have passed the worst of it.

Trollheart 09-25-2021 08:31 PM

Wow, that's awful, Stephen. Here's wishing her (and you) a speedy and full recovery. Keep us updated.

adidasss 09-25-2021 08:41 PM

Wow, so sorry to hear that Stephen, such bad luck! And in Australia, where cases have been quite low compared to the rest of the world. Hope for the best!

Marie Monday 09-26-2021 04:51 AM

That's terrifying, I hope she gets better soon.

I'm so sorry to hear that Stephen. I hope that you will fall into the "asymptomatic" category, and that your wife improves after the tracheotomy.
Take care. We'll be thinking of you.

Trollheart 09-26-2021 07:38 PM

Karen FINALLY got her second shot yesterday, no, Friday? Is this Sunday? Friday then. Friday morning. Oh no wait: Thursday. I'm confused. Anyway, she's now fully vaxxed so thank the Great Pixie for that. Took nearly six weeks when it should have been four since her first shot but at least we got there. Oh, and I got about a dozen texts with appointments for her to go to a vaxx centre, half of them AFTER I had spent a half hour on the phone explaining she is bed-bound. Idiots.

Not quite, I spent 5 days in hospital after I passed out at home. My wife tested positive while I was in hospital otherwise I was going to hotel quarantine. I came home two days before my wife was hositalised. I’m only thankful my daughter got it relatively mild and my son never got any symptoms despite testing positive.

Stephen really sad but hoping she picks up.My experiences may give you some in sight and good hopes.. I had a few years back got put in and induced coma and it really does save your life. Had the tube in throat to breathe and Stomach to feed me a few other slight necessary addon's.
...You can' t talk when you come around, which honestly I was not told and was in drug induced horror world for a few days..side affects of what they may or may not give you....
It took me time to get things together but the Hospital help with your whole well being....I am living a good life since,,just find my emotions are a tad touchy. Your get through this Stephen...Just expect a few ups and downs..
Thinking of anybody that is suffering right now.

I've had family members get covid as well. A couple had to go to the ER and at least one, my cousin, got the Regeneron cocktail. He recovered quickly, and nobody was actually hospitalized. Anyway, hope the best for your wife, Stephen. The good news is they are a lot better with handling Covid than they were in the beginning so there is always hope.

Thanks for the insight. They tried reducing her sedation last night but her temperature spiked. They upped the sedation and ran some blood tests to see if they missed any sources of infection. They think it may have been a possible anxiety attack as she was coming around and that may have elevated her heart and respiration and driven the spike in her temperature. They are proceeding slowly in consultation with her psychiatrist. The wait is excruciating but they don’t have any major concerns outside of her oxygen requirements so baby steps towards bringing her out of sedation and hopefully they can bring her around over the next few days.

Trollheart 09-29-2021 05:07 AM

Just try to keep strong, for both of you. There's really nothing you can do but be there for her, and I'm sure she's in the best hands possible. Oh, and if you see any anti-vaxxers, punch them out. Seriously, take care and keep us updated as and when you can. And make sure to eat; she'll need you when she recovers and comes home.

Stephen 10-01-2021 04:01 PM

The hospital arranged permission for me and the kids to visit and say our goodbyes. They detected a new infection in cultures and her lungs are already so damaged if there is any further decline there will be nothing they can do. There is still hope but she is critically ill and doctors are not optimistic.

The Batlord 10-01-2021 04:28 PM

Oh dude I am so sorry. I don't know what to say.

Trollheart 10-01-2021 05:07 PM

Oh man that is so horrible. So very sorry. I had hoped there'd be a happy ending. Lost for words now. :(

adidasss 10-01-2021 06:21 PM

So sorry to hear that Stephen, my thoughts are with you.

Lisnaholic 10-01-2021 07:03 PM

I am really sorry Stephen. That is very difficult news to hear. Try to hold things together for the children's sake, though I assume you have other family support around you right now.
Take care, my friend.

I mean we've been living with the flu for longer than we've been alive. There isn't necessarily a win state like a video game. Maybe this is just our life now.

Marie Monday 10-02-2021 05:11 AM

I'm so sorry Stephen. What a horrible development just when things were looking up. I really hope your wife will get through this.

rubber soul 10-02-2021 05:11 AM

Yeah, I'm resigned to the fact this is something we're going to just have to live with. In time, we'll adapt; we'll have to if we want to continue the way we have been used to living. We'll get vaccinated, hopefully, and we'll just go on.

I don't really know you, Stephen, but I can only imagine what you must be going through. You have my sympathies.

Guybrush 10-02-2021 11:40 AM

Stephen, I'm so sorry you're going through this. My hopes are with you and your family.

ribbons 10-04-2021 12:07 PM

Stephen, I am so sorry that you and your family are going through this nightmare. You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers, and will remain so.

Stephen 10-04-2021 09:55 PM

Thank you all for your kindness. The situation has been so overwhelming it is comforting to find compassion when I need it most.

Lisnaholic 10-05-2021 06:38 AM

Well, even though it's from a distance, some of us have become good friends here over the years. If you want to PM or anything, please don't hestitate, Stephen.
As you can see, many of us are worried about your situation.
