Coronavirus: COVID-19

Spreading quite quickly and today more people have been diagnosed outside of China than inside. Made its way to South America today too.

Have you bought yourself a mask and stocked up on tinned food yet?

The Batlord 02-26-2020 02:30 PM

I think K Addict should be banned for all of our sakes.

DwnWthVwls 02-26-2020 02:38 PM

No

Frownland 02-26-2020 02:39 PM

Newborn baby born to coronavirus patient recovers with no medication

Stick that bitch in a juicer and make a vaccine ffs

OccultHawk 02-26-2020 02:42 PM

I did buy some masks tbh

I’m not sure what to make of it. The description of it and governments reaction to it seem misaligned. I’m not drawing any conspiracy conclusions but it seems like it would have to be more dreadful than they’re saying for China to cut off that much industry. idk

I still think it’s really going to tear through India

India is so crowded and chaotic and poor they probably couldn’t track it very well at all - however they have managed to get vaccines for polio and small pox and mmr and all that to basically EVERYBODY so maybe they can monitor things better than I think

Hey, big pharma, just distill its piss and use that water for a phat homeopathic remedy. No need to be a crazy person.

WWWP 02-26-2020 03:10 PM

Someone from that cruise ship just got transferred to my county.

It would be just my luck to be suicidal since puberty and just when I start to feel a little better to get infected with some virus and die.

OccultHawk 02-26-2020 03:33 PM

What if they can’t make a vaccine and we all get it just like the common cold?

DwnWthVwls 02-26-2020 05:30 PM

Maybe you could lose ur job from calling out and then collect unemployment. I feel like they'd give you a shot for "fired cause coronavirus".

^ Trump and White House are downplaying it for economic reasons and because they'll prob be caught out for all the staff and spending cuts they've made to the agencies that co-ordinate the US national defense to these kinds of epidemics. Or as CNN explains it:-

Spoiler for chunk of text:
Quote:

Since the dawn of the Trump presidency, countless experts have warned that the president's lack of credibility would imperil the country in the event of an emergency. With the worsening coronavirus outbreak, those fears may be coming true.

President Trump's political allies have made overly optimistic statements only to be contradicted by the government's top scientists and doctors. For example, Trump claimed on Monday that the coronavirus was "very much under control in the USA." A day later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the virus' spread to the US was inevitable. He said the stock market is "starting to look very good" even as the Dow was nosediving amid coronavirus anxiety.
And the president has been blaming the media for this predicament, reverting to the same tactics that he has employed ever since taking office.
On Wednesday, in a widely-criticized tweet, he claimed that CNN and MSNBC "are doing everything possible to make the Caronavirus look as bad as possible, including panicking markets, if possible."

President Trump has systematically ... engaged in what several columnists have called a "war on expertise." "Trump's disdain for science and his cuts to science and public health programs have subverted preparedness for emergencies like the coronavirus," said Michiko Kakutani, the famous literary critic and author of "The Death of Truth."

The President's lies have given the public ample reason to distrust what he says -- and this has negatively affected perceptions of his administration as a whole. Ultimately, Kakutani said, Trump's free-flowing falsehoods undermine the credibility of the government leaving the public unsure of who or what to trust.
"Truth and an informed public are essential to the functioning of a democracy -- and essential, too, for a practical and reasoned response to an emergency," she said.

On the coronavirus, an expert said it's a question of "when" not "if" it arrives - so I'd say yes, get a mask and a bit of extra food - and when Trump trots out some graphic that he's marked up with a Sharpie pen, don't believe it.

BBC Newsnight
Feb 26, 2020

The Health Secretary Matt Hancock today outlined the government response to the Coronavirus - including enhanced monitoring at airports and ports, designated hospitals ready for mass testing, guidance for schools and employers, and the roll out of a public information campaign.

In Scotland, the Chief Medical Officer said it was "highly likely" there would be a positive case and the Scottish government has established two testing labs in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

But with the country in a state of limbo, the government cannot provide cast iron assurances, but it CAN ready us for an outbreak. So has it?

I'm not worried really but I think it will get worse. Saw that they reckon 500,000 people could die from it in the UK, don't think it'll be that bad but I don't think it's a fuss over nothing either.

Schools, GP surgeries and Canary Wharf were shut down yesterday. Looks to be getting pretty bad in Italy.

Just hope the Euros go ahead this summer :D

If I had the money I'd start hoarding masks to sell

This might be the big one we've all been waiting for

Kinda surprised none of the candidates really hit him hard on this during the debates

If this **** hits the stock market hard enough Trump could lose in 2020

Can wearing a face mask protect you from the new coronavirus?

^ That moment came for me in the mid-terms when Republicans began saying they were the party for protecting pre-existing conditions, when they were actively engaged in pushing laws through federal courts to reject pre-existing conditioners from health care.
(Also, tbh, not the Matrix for me, but Alice Through the Looking Glass.)

^ I expect they will soon; Rachel Maddow did a whole section on how Trump has gutted the system of protection put in place by Obama.

^ LOL. That's true. All a facemask does is reduce the frequency with which people touch their face. That may help if you often sit on public transport scratching your beard, picking your nose, sucking your thumb and biting your nails. And who amongst us does not do all of those things?

jwb 02-27-2020 09:42 AM

I thought it was more about preventing people with symptoms from potentially spreading their illness.

Either way people are buying that **** up. If you can sell magnetic bracelets that are supposed to improve your balance you can certainly sell face masks during a potential pandemic.

The Batlord 02-27-2020 09:46 AM

Starting to rethink that "No Chinamen" sign at work.

Mindfulness 02-27-2020 09:55 AM

Just tried to buy 100 masks last night, 60 bucks but its 359 shipping and cant get to me until mid march. then another was only 50 for 50 bucks and cheap shipping but cant get to me until late march.

i might have a friend that can sell a small amount to me.

I tend to doubt such a sign is really necessary at BK

The Batlord 02-27-2020 10:06 AM

There's two Chinese restaurants within a block so you'd be surprised.

jwb 02-27-2020 10:37 AM

If you hung that sign in the Chinese places people would just interpret it as a statement on the contents of the meat.

Look around you. See if you can strap a coffee filter to your face.

It might work in a pinch.

Yesterday my throat started hurting and now it's two AM and I'm awake and my throat hurts like hell. Hope I don't have it. There was a case in the town next to where I live so it wouldn't be too outlandish to think that I have it but of course it could be a normal cold or flu.
It's especially annoying since I'm on a business trip in Bavaria since yesterday, interacting with lots of people.
Staying in a hotel right now. We weren't able to finish our work yesterday so I wanted to continue today but it looks like I'll try to go to a doctor in this town. Hope I won't be too sick to drive home, it's a three hour drive. Damn, I was looking forward to a chill weekend.

OccultHawk 02-27-2020 06:58 PM

It’s probably strep

grindy 02-27-2020 07:12 PM

I swear, I didn't try to deep throat my girlfriend's strap-to-cockus.

OccultHawk 02-27-2020 11:46 PM

The NYTimes is saying it’s 20 times more deadly as the flu, a vaccine is at least a year off, availability of the vaccine when (or even if) it becomes available will be another major obstacle, and some doctors are predicting you’re as likely to get it as you are a cold.

The Dow just dropped 1190 points (haha) and Asians have been targeted for hate crimes.

Lucem Ferre 02-27-2020 11:50 PM

This is only going to make Trump's rejection of the 2020 election results that much scarier. Imagine Trump fascism during a massive outbreak of a deadly disease. We kind of deserve it.

OccultHawk 02-27-2020 11:56 PM

It’s a great excuse for martial law and when our government completely abuses it with deep fascist intent it will be more evidence to support my theory that the American government is worse than China.

That sucks :(
Keep us updated. I've had a sore throat and I'm in a corona-infected part of England but it was fine, I would worry if you also get a fever. Your neighbour having it is disquieting though

Welcome, it is an honour to have you here.

My first thought was Bristol or London, then I remembered Merseyside and I think the North East have had some coronavirus patients too.

You're definitely not in the region I'm in. COVID-19 free here

No fever.
My throat is still somewhat ****ed and I feel overall tired, but this is to be expected considering the ****ty sleep I had tonight and the long drive I just had.
Mostly pissed off that I had to miss work rn.
It was some guy from a town nearby, so not exactly a neighbor.
