Reports of the death of this forum are premature and exaggerated
https://thumbs.gfycat.com/Waterlogge...rb-max-1mb.gif
Look, everyone knows this place is not as active as it used to be. Many members have gone, for various reasons - I only came back relatively recently after a protracted absence - and the interaction between those left is less than it used to be. Drama doesn't seem to flare up much now (and though most of the time this was a pain in the arse it could in some ways be cited as the lifeblood of a thriving forum: if people care there's argument which often leads to drama etc) and in general the impression is that a lot of people are sitting around, doing other stuff, occasionally checking in, checking back out. It's not as it used to be, that's certain. But these reports of the forum being dead are just not accurate. If the forum were dead there'd be no discussion, and you only have to look at the pages to see how recently threads have been posted in. Anyone looking for debate or even a knock-down fight can head to the journals section, where you can butt heads with me about anything from Irish history and the relevance of Iron Maiden to vampires and serial killers, animation and exploration, and there's Soundgarden's underrated albums, Marie's Riot Grrrl journal, Key's tireless and very interesting work, the always fascinating and different world of innerspaceboy and a whole lot more. Absolutely everyone writing a journal, I can guarantee you, would love comment, discussion, debate or some interest to be taken in what they write. Those who claim the forum is dead are, in my opinion, the laziest members and the least willing to contribute. If something is wrong, don't just sit there bitching about it. Do something. Make a thread. Take part in one, or more. Start a journal. Run a ****ing pub quiz about hip-hop or jazz, write about your pet lizard. Get up off your arse and kick life into the forum; if you think it's dying, administer CPR. Or, you know, just grumble and moan and get the candles ready for the wake. I suppose at least there'll be beer. There's nothing more annoying than insects that keep buzzing in your face. But almost as annoying is people whining about how bad things are without having the balls to actually do something about it. So either stop whinging if you're going to do nothing and accept the place is not dead even if you think it is, or join in and help keep us a least a shadow of what we used to be. There's life in the old forum yet. |
I think we shud have a forum meetup in Amsterdam after covid :)))

Too lazy to read this long winded eulogy lol

In all seriousness... As far as"getting off my ass" I have other priorities besides creating forum content
I'm training at work to operate and it's exhausting with the schedule and when I do feel like doing something creative with my free time I either work on this story I'm writing or play chess or something. It just is what it is. I'm not even so much complaining the forum is dead just pointing it out when you guys complain about discussions you don't care about or which seem redundant and repetitive. It's the same old arguments with the same old people cause the forum isn't that active. And it's on your radar so much once again cause the forum isn't that active. I would've never noticed the debate happening in the missing posters thread if it wasn't one of the most active discussions on the forum at that time. That's my only point. It doesn't bother me so much.. You guys who wanted it to stop are the ones who actually have a problem with the state of things. And even though the discussion stopped immediately you guys kept bitching about it and reviving it for another 10 pages lol Tldr every time you point the finger there are 3 pointing back at you! :shycouch: |

At the same time, I get what TH is trying to say (and thanks for the plug on my journal, you wonderful human, you). Sadly, I don't know if us folks creating more content is going to reverse the course of things at all. I think we all know we need new blood - fresh meat - to liven things up around here. MB has become, in some ways, the same group of 10 - 15 people talkin **** about the same things. Out of curiosity, anyone remember how many mods there were on MB around 2010? I betcha it was more than 3. |
Freaks......?

At a glance, he looks busy and yet the guy never achieves the laying of one single brick; is it some metaphor about the slow pace of MB these days ? ;) |

I still read almost every day after 10+ years. My modding has dipped a bit since I've been so busy but the decrease in activity means that the slack gets picked up quite easily. TH's idea of having journal posts without mod approval helped with this too. The report button is useful. I don't need to be here every day...
Yet I am for the most part. I've been sharing music a hell of a lot more than I used too. I used to just be a lounge lizard but now I like to share sh*t I find. This is the new chapter for me besides occasionally dealing with some drama sh*t on here. I miss OH but the drama is gone honestly. I suppose I'll be here for the long haul. |

Discussions or complaints about how MB is dead have been going on practically since its beginning (if you do a search for "forum is dead", the first threads start popping up in 2005).
Maybe there is an objective way to judge if the activity has gotten lower which would dispell any doubts, but frankly it doesn't matter. As many people point out, it is what you make of it. Maybe some people expect more immediate interaction, or more detailed interaction or more interesting debates. Those same people should then definitely try and start some interesting discussions. My approach to the forum at the moment is actually to avoid long and drawn out debates. It requires a hell of a lot of time and I guess I'd rather be doing something else than arguing over the internet. Them days are long past. If you have a job and a life, then your forum activity is definitely not gonna be very involved. So in that sense, MB is actually perfect for me. It's not boring because within a span of 24h, normally there are at least one or two pages of threads with new posts in it. Anything more than that and it becomes cumbersome. So for me, the size and activity level is perfect. It will be curious to see if this forum will ever truly die, apart from the owners pulling the plug. I'm a little fascinated that in this day and age there are still new people, some of which quite young, signing up because they wanna talk about music. It's pretty amazing. Let's see how it goes. It's clear that I, much like Exo, am here for the long haul. |

Easier to wind up than batlord... Yeah you only have to make a tldr op thread post with a massive essay to get me to make a stupid one liner response. You're really the master manipulator aren't you TH  :shycouch:

'the forum is dying' is the mb version of 'back in my day'

It's probably the second post.

I feel like I'm one of the few that actually tries to get things happening around here, but then inevitably I always get too busy or some other hobby comes up and I can't consistently devote the time to keep doing whatever I started. But hey at least I try. And that's why I am clearly mod worthy, YD for Mod 2021 and every single year after that bitches

I just joined today looking for some sort of an online music community, so I hope it's not as dead as you guys seem to say it is

The only thing premature about this forum was OH's ejaculation from it.

I came to this forum in 2004 after the previous forum I was on died. The owners pulled the plug for whatever reason. I still think about that place.
I posted daily on MB for years, and I had some good fun here. If it dies, we'll all move on and it will be fine. Just enjoy it while it lasts. And if you really want to do something for the boards, post about music. |

I assume you meant ejection? :pssst: |
