The difference between aspiring for easy money vs attaching yourself to some kind of social movement is that either you make some quick money or you don't. That's a concrete thing to hope for that can be easily verified whether you fail or not. Where as your contribution to some social cause is more nebulous and how significant it is to you is more subjective.

I don't even know what you mean by letting them colonize my brain to be selfish. Selfishness is my natural inclination. I want more money because i think i will enjoy that more. Not only does my own experience confirm that, the studies I've heard are that when you are below 70k a year earning more money does improve happiness but after that it tops out. You and i are both well below that mark. So i think the choice between say 12 vs 18 dollars an hour seems pretty obvious to me and most people i know irl...

Rational self interest is supposed to be when everyone does what's in their own best interest while recognizing the rights of others so that competition breeds innovation and success for the group as a whole, but really it's just withdrawing consideration for others and getting what you can at the expense of others. American capitalist doctrine and propaganda promotes the former but really fosters the latter. I'd say you're bad at all that and don't want to be that but ultimately it still infects your worldview.

Once again that's another conveniently nebulous consolation prize on your part. In your mind there is some serious symbolic implications to what you are saying but it's all post hoc rationalization bull****. I could just as easily say you have just forfeited your mind to a rather lazy albeit trendy version of online communism. As if it's any less of a half baked ready made mold that you fell into conveniently around the same time that everyone else did.

Or if i felt like it i could try to be more charitable. It's all just propaganda at the end of the day either way.

The truth is though, and i know this is somewhat sociopathic, but if i could just snap my fingers and be rich, even if other people had to suffer, i probably would press that button. To me it would be the safe, possibly phony answer to suggest otherwise.
