I think that's pretty indicative of Stephen King as a whole.

See, I always thought this description fit someone like Dean Koontz more. Nothing but filler. I've read so many of his books I can't even count them anymore, and I can only remember what one or two of them was about. The rest all blend together.

I actually think Stephen King is underrated in a weird way. Because he's so popular, and because he's thought of as a "genre fiction" writer, people dismiss him, but his actual writing is quite good. I have a sneaking suspicion that fifty years from now he'll be held in higher literary esteem than he is currently.

Yeah, the "Hipster Effect."

I think that's a little too low for him, I think of him as more a burger you would get at a regional chain restaurant like Red Robin, Milestones, Bennigan's, and whatever they have on the East Coast and in the South. Imagine yourself going out for lunch, you could go to McDonalds or you could go out to a nice restaurant, one option seems infinitely better than the other one, but you don't know if you want to spend the money and really, it's only lunch, not like some special occasion. Then you get the idea to go to a restaurant you've eaten at a hundred times and know what you want to order, you know it's going to be prepared for you the same way, you know exactly what you're getting. It's better than just going to McDonalds and far cheaper than going to some steak house, it has a consistent reputation and you know you will be full once you've finished eating it.

Basically take that little scenario and swap out "lunch" with "bookstore", "McDonalds" with Dean Koontz, Red Robin/Milestones/Bennigan's etc. with "Stephen King", and "steak house" with... I dunno H.P. Lovecraft or something. The metaphor really works, you sit down and read a Stephen King book you know immediately what you're going to get (unless it is your first time). It fills you up with maybe not the most nutritious of meals, but your head is full of works, thoughts, expressions, etc. just like a Red Robin hamburger but with lettuce, beef, cheese, and shit.

I'm just about to start reading this book. I've been told that it's the most boring of the lot but that doesn't mean much considering how great the others were.

Has anyone read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? I loved the movies (both of them) but I tried reading the book and it is SO hard to get into... I'm still stuck in the court case bit it's excruciating to read. Worth pursuing?

We take into consideration it has to follow A Storm of Swords which was pretty much all action that so much of the plot became a bit disorientating. A Feast for Crows is definitely a lot more slow-paced and some characters you've grown fond of wont have chapters in it, but it does flesh out a few characters like Cersei and Brienne while also acting as a set up for the next two books.

I can't get past the second or third chapter. I want to read it so badly, but I've literally started it about four or five times at this point. It's just hard to get through. I was going to try to get through it before I saw the movie, but I really think it's just not for me.
