I know people that are huge fans of all his stuff, this just seemed like a good place to start being his most popular. The Merry Pranksters were awesome though, i wish i was alive at that time to be part of that

NOBODY SPOIL IT BECAUSE I HAVE NOT YET FINISHED THE BOOK.

Spoiler for Where I am:
Lucy just died.

I was terribly disappointed by Dracula.
The beginning is awesome, but at some point it just gets messy, sappy and annoying.
But see for yourself.

But I ****ing loved The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. What an awesome book. Too bad literally everyone knows they are the same person. It must have been such a mindblowing twist for readers back then.

I find the Victorian-era sexism to be hilarious. Especially since...

Spoiler for spoiler:
Whenever the men treat the women as weaklings in need of protection, and keep them in the dark about important plot events in order to spare their delicate feminine minds, it always backfires and leaves everyone in an even worse situation than if they'd treated them as equals.

But yeah, the beginning is clearly the best part.

Spoiler for spoiler:
Even in 2015, the scene with the three vampire brides is still boner-worthy.

It was probably relatively progressive for its time, the women are often characterized as strong and all that. But, yeah, I know what you mean.

But what annoyed me about the second half or so was
Spoiler for .:
how 90% of it seemed to be them crying, praying and telling each other how awesome they are. Would that really be a spoiler? Well there's not much else there.

Also Van Helsings 'accent' got so ****ing annoying at some point.

Robert Heinlein - Stranger in a Strange Land.

Spoiler for Wow.:
Took less than half a chapter to be reminded about how badly Heinlein writes females and how obsessed he was about sex and innuendo.

The Batlord 10-22-2015 06:11 PM

To be fair, most male sci fi/fantasy authors can't write women for ****. They're nerds. Give 'em a break.

Chula Vista 10-22-2015 06:16 PM

Ya, but Heinlein is just plain ridiculous at times. Part of it is he was writing back when wives stayed at home cooking and cleaning and would greet their husbands after work with a pipe and slippers.

Lately I've really wanted to read a classic from the golden age of science fiction - an indisputable milestone of literature. For the last few days I considered reading Dune, but this evening I firmly decided that Asimov's Foundation is the perfect fit for my literary intrigue.

Nearly universally acclaimed as the greatest set of Science Fiction literature ever produced, the Foundation Trilogy was the keystone for everything that followed.

Winner of a special Hugo Award as Best All Time Science Fiction Series, Foundation will escape me no longer.

Read Dune, though.
