Also Scum (the cinema version) should be added too. It was my first experience outside of Horror movies of a film that can seriously assault the senses and leave you drained. Salo and The Devils should be added too.

An interesting thing about Salo is that it seems to be a very mild adaptation of Marquis De Sade's 120 Days of Sodom .. I haven't read it (nor would I), but at least it seems that way after checking out the plot synopsis of the depraved work on Wikipedia.

I don't understand why anyone would write a story about rich "libertines" torturing and sexually molesting children for months before finally killing them, including their own daughters. And it's from 1785.

I guess Marquis de Sade was a real *******

talking about films that make you depressed and feel like killing yourselves, i'd advise you to refrain from watching "Der Todesking" (The King of Death)

in four short vignettes, it aptly demonstrates how life is, well, actually really meaningless

what ever you are saying there....you are right.....Sade was a real (insert any foul word)....keep in mind what word is rooted in his name

but you cannot just dismiss his books as Sadistic pornography and this one in particular is really not written that way (or at least not so much in my opinion....Justine is much worse for that aspect) but the philosophy in his writing should not be ignored very few people have been willing to express mankind for what they are capable of and really grasp the concept of "will of power"....and the corruption in everyone's soul

and this book is a real joy to read while riding on public transportation

I tried this with Bataille's Story of the Eye but nobody said anything except some hipster dude who probably knew about it from that Of Montreal song.

Was it any of these:

1) You were a fan of the franchise in your youth and you saw how a TV show about cars that turn into robots was somehow warped into a movie about a guy in his early 20's trying to get laid?

2) A movie Michael Bay had no interest in making

3) A movie where the titular characters get very little screen time in favor of Michael Bay jerking off the US Military

4) A Michael Bay movie?

Finally saw Jacob's Ladder ..

I've had it for ages, but it took a while for me to get around to actually watching it. Part of the reason, I believe, is because I've often seen it compared to The Machinist which I thought was good, but not entirely to my tastes. In The Machinist, although Bale did an excellent job, I found I didn't care that much for his character. The twist wasn't all that and I didn't like that it came across as a sort of "feel bad" movie.

Jacob's Ladder is similar in some ways. When you first start watching it, it seems to be about this guy whose reality is coming apart, but Jacob's Ladder really was brilliantly done I thought. The characters had much more room for drama and I really wanted for things to turn out well for the lead character (played by Tim Robbins). All the weird stuff going on early in the movie really caught my interest and by the end of it, I had that revelation which led me to understand most of the scenes that had left me pondering earlier.

Great film and it instantly became one of my favourites. I'm already looking forward to a second viewing.

One of my favorite movies. Everything you said was pretty much spot on. The movie just appealed to everything I'm into. One thing I loved was the fact that there really wasn't a lot of special effects, but the result was creepy as hell. For example the jerking heads. No special effects, just sped up camera work. The truly creepy moments in cinema are the most real, not generated by computers.
