I'm not a big fan of westerns and haven't seen many. I wasn't really that impressed to be honest. Wayne is of course a commanding figure but I didn't find the story too compelling and didn't really appreciate the comedic interludes. It certainly doesn't compare to the likes of Once upon a time in the west, The wild bunch or 3:10 to Yuma.

Once upon a time in the west *literally* sent me to sleep. Good/bad/ugly i can really appreciate however, but spaghettis get old fast. There are so many f*cking takes on the western and some great films that would convert even those who didn't think they could possibly enjoy one... Searchers is the classic Ford template isn't it, i think it's his most accessible to the 'modern viewer'.

It's a slow burner for sure, but it's filled with an immense amount of tension (I'd say mostly with an ingenious use of sound) which makes the slow takes nail-bitingly exciting. Plus the cinematography...you won't find anything like it in any western. I still find it a bit odd (and amusing) that THE best western film is actually an Italian film...*giggles*

...it didn't help that i was sleep deprived on viewing it, and charles bronson has(/had) a face like a horse's arse which is difficult to look at for long periods of time, tense or not!

re the Italian thing, another good western not shot (or set) in the wild west is 'the Proposition'. As stated there are actually tons of these that fit into neither the classical Hollywood nor spaghetti western categories, but my power of recollection is weak at this time

I'm not a big fan of Westerns either but if you are looking for something a little more 'Cult' and just as influential as Leone's work then you have to check this out from 1966:

High Plains Drifter is one of my favourite westerns, the atmosphere is superb. Also you can't beat either Shane or High Noon for classic Westerns. Another under appreciated gem right here:

^ 'Shane' i loved, and Gregory Peck has done some great ones... the only other really sublime Ford that springs to mind is 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'.

And for 'cult', as you say, despite being set in the latter half of the 20th century there is definitely a case for 'Bad Day at Black Rock'. Watch (btw spencer tracy's character is meant to be one-armed):
