Boogie Nights and The Master are two of my all time favourites.

Gangs Of New York holds up rather well.

I really dislike Gangs of New York. One of Scorcese's weakest.
I do think he is one of the most overrated directors ever, though.

Scorcese deserves all credit in my opinion, particularly for The Departed which has remained one of my all time favorites since I saw it in the cinema. Wolf of Wall Street was also great fun! Age hasn't slowed him down yet.

It's been about 5 or 6 years since I last saw this movie and a recent article on Badassdigest intrigued me enough to rewatch it. It's a pretty bog-standard affair with some well done practical effects, nudity, and one stomach churning scene where Spanish Zadok Allen gets his face sliced off. There's not really any "good" Lovecraft adaptation outside of the 2005 black and white silent version of The Call of Cthulhu but Dagon is certainly one of the better ones.
As a fan of Lovecraft litterature and the cthuhlu mythos in general, anything related to it piques my interest. Of course I've seen this as well as various other Lovecraft movies and I agree this is decent .. It's an entertaining horror B-movie and I like that so much of the inspiration behind it comes from The Shadow Over Innsmouth which is a cool story

I'm with Fred, Gangs of New York is massively entertaining. From a purely technical or directorial perspective sure it suffers here and there, especially compared to the rest of Scorsese's catalog, but the characters, setting, countless memorable scenes, and overall massive scale of the story is enough to win me over every time.

I'm with you on There Will Be Blood also, that movie is such an emotional journey. The backing music has an eerie quality that hits me hard. Lewis played the role of his life. I still can't fathom Scorcese being overrated, I could name 20 films by him that were legendary and filmed beautifully.

Ever seen the movie it was based on? Pretty damn good and some of the scenes Scorcese copied pretty straight up.

No, haven't seen it .. I've thought about it, but it's pretty far back on my list. There are just so many movies to see.

Seven Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia and The Seventh Seal are some of the movies I feel I need to watch at the moment, as well as Lars Von Triers Nymphomaniac. I also want to see The Theory of Everything and Boyhood.

The best movie experience I've had in a long time was watching Birdman. Holy crap .. don't think I've been that impressed with a movie on leaving the cinema since I saw Watchmen.

That's quite a watch list, you're in for a good time. Nymphomaniac was pretty great imo, and The Seventh Seal is outrageously good. Have you seen any of Bergman's other films? You should add those (especially Hour of the Wolf, Persona, and Wild Strawberries) to your watch list as well if you haven't yet.
