well you didn't miss much in not watching it 3D. I forgot the whole world of Pandora the second I stepped out of the theatre.

I thought that Sharlto Copley was really good in that movie and Wikus is a really awesome character. |
The characters in Avatar are paper thin..
The movie is still awesome though |
Le dîner de cons
1998 French film about this guy who has to find an idiot to bring to a dinner party. They never actually go to a party but it has a lot of funny moments with this idiot messing just about everything up. Being made into an English film with Steve Carell called Dinner For Schmucks. I really enjoyed this. (: |

We once thought of doing a similar thing with some friends... but then we knew it's going to turn against us some way. I'm sure the Steve Carell remake will be screwed up. It's La cage aux folles all over again. |

And I think it was trash.

There must be a reason that it's critically acclaimed and earned megabux?
|
Derr..... apparently it has "groundbreaking special effects." And Cameron directed it.... people like that for some reason.
I thought it was fun for what it was. Obviously not a great movie, but I wouldn't say total trash. Just... a sci fi action thing... that's it. |
Trash?
It's not without it's faults but cotdayum, I think some of you people have spent way too much f*cking time going to RT for all of your recommendations and you have forgotten what a bad movie actually is. |

I'll admit it was fun to look at for a bit, but I couldn't make it 3 hours. |
Unobtanium actually is a real term used to describe some elements that scientists know have to exist, but haven't been found yet.
I'm not kidding, this is straight from my science teacher's mouth. Of course it's possible he's wrong. And anyhow, it doesn't really fit into the context of Avatar. |

Also, I thought the marine guy was hysterical, he may have been stereotypical and over the top, but that actually made him pretty entertaining. |
Its reverse hype. people go in expecting great things and are underwhelmed. then they go let everyone know how bad it is. it is what it is: mediocre.
|
|
You've been watching some really *** movies lately, TCS.
http://chatk.org/imgtopic/The.Illusionist.jpeg The first half was cliche and disappointing, but the second half was interesting enough to bring it from the land of mediocre. Still not nearly as good as The Prestige though... |
Match Point has Scarlett Johansson. I literally had to pause it every now and again to mas.. I mean, to admire her beauty. Come on, Match Point wasn't bad... I enjoyed it despite not being up to my usual standard. What other cack films have I watched lately? The only one I can think of that I watched recently was Nowhere Boy, and I thought that was a brilliant British film.
The Illusionist was mediocre, entertaining enough. Like you say though, The Prestige>>>>The Illusionist. |
Scarlett Johansson, to me, is overrated .. Her role in "Girl With a Pearl Earring" for example was dreadfully boring! I don't really find her that gorgeous either to tell the truth.
|
SJ is beautiful. :( |
Scarlett Johansson is a damn fine woman and certainly a worthy reason to watch a movie.

He wasn't half bad in it, I thought he played the part well. And on reflection Match Point falls under the category of a bit shit, but very entertaining. |

SJ is incredibly hot but I probably wouldn't rank her as high on the tier list as others would.
Also, when watching Ghost World, was I the only person who found Thora Birch more attractive? O_o |

Really, I don't get why the story bothers people so much, yeah it's basically just Dances with Wolves in space. But that's actually one of my favorite movies, so I don't get the big deal. The story isn't really bad, it's just not terribly original, but nothing really is, the Dances With Wolves/Pocahontas thing is just hard for people to get over. I'll give you the lack of character development, but was anybody really expecting a character driven movie? Really? It's a visual driven movie, I want to know why these kinds of movies are so damn bad. And why Burton, Scott, Lynch, Tarantino and so on got so much flack for making "style over substance" films. The movies are a visual medium, that was what they were intended to be the day they were invented, if all you want is a story you can read a book. |

Ahem. Anyway, about Avatar--it's not the story that bugged me about it. I get that it's a visually driven film and I'm cool with that. But a lot of the clunkiness in the dialog is enough to distract from the visual aspect by inducing facepalm and taking me (at least) out of the movie entirely. I'm not asking for depth--it's more that it didn't feel natural enough to make it work. (Which is something Tarantino does really well, Burton usually manages to get at least close to and Lynch... well, "natural" doesn't exactly apply to Lynch--but his realities have their own internal logic.) That said, I didn't hate it. I'd watch it again. What it did right, it did better than anything else, but it's still overall pretty average. |

It's been years. I'd forgotten how much I love this movie (and how much better it is than Labyrinth). |

Both actors were great. Just my kind of movie! :D |

I like Labyrinth, to be sure. Especially the fox fellow. And Bowie, OFC.
But that one's just way more my style. |
