If you can explain to me why you think Crash is a BEST PICTURE winning film, please, please do so, because I just don't see it.

I'm not even trying to compare it to Brokeback Mountain. I just don't see how that film did anything different. It was cookie cutter "RACISM IS BAD" in every scene. The acting was great in moments, especially from Dillon and Pena, but my god the actual structure of the film was like the most forced shove it down your throat theme I've ever seen.

Looking at the noms from that year, I guess Good Night, and Good Luck should have won. Haven't seen Brokeback (because I'm a secret homophobe) or Munich, but Crash was like a movie by a director who had a history of great films who was just phoning it in and Capote was just standard biopic fare that I've grown tired of.

I never saw Crash, but I was really underwhelmed by Brokeback Mountain. It certainly has a lot of meaning as a major cultural moment, but as movie it was Bridges of Madison County level dull. I found it so dull, in fact, that I couldn't stop noticing how fake looking Jake Gyllenhaal's mustache and Heath Ledger's wrinkles were, which is never a good sign.

I just want to make sure that you are all not talking about the amazing film based off of JG Ballard's novel and directed by David Cronenberg.

Heh, I remember when that movie came out. Another one I never got around to seeing. I always wanted to though, more than I ever wanted to see the other Crash.

bob. 09-20-2016 12:11 AM

its worth seeing...a wonderful film about obsession and ptsd.

djchameleon 09-20-2016 12:39 AM

I've seen that Crash by accident. I was hoping it was the other one and I popped that one in going wtf the whole time.

Out of all the films that year it actually evoked strong feelings from me after watching it. I'm sure it did the same thing for the members that voted for it. It might have seemed like Racism by numbers to you but I fucking loved it. I loved it so much that I thought the tv series could capture the same magic in the bottle that the movie did and boy was I wrong.

I still watched the tv series until it was cancelled but by no stretch of the imagination was it even comparable to the movie. Dennis Hopper couldn't even save it and he gave some great performances throughout the seasons.

Oldboy & Cache >>>>>>>>> Crash

djchameleon 09-20-2016 06:01 AM

wtf is this Cache movie that you guys keep mentioning? Never heard of it. Does it have a Best Picture award? I think NOT.

No but seriously what it is?

I've never seen it but I know it's a Michael Haneke film about a family that keeps getting blackmail video tapes mailed to them or something like that.

bob. 09-20-2016 08:58 AM

Brick was the best film of 2005.

Frownland 09-20-2016 09:03 AM

Incest>murder bro. Brick is phenomenal though.

Coherence

Well wasn't that just the most mind bending experience I've had since Primer. Great understated and dialogue driven film that I'll be watching a few more times.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 09-20-2016 09:48 AM

If you haven't seen Cache, watch it immediately. Twice though, because it doesn't really set in the first time. Then come back to us and tell us how you agree that Crash sucks.

I like Brick but I'd pick Broken Flowers over all the 2005 movies mentioned so far.

Can we please move on to 2006 already??

I thought that The Departed was great.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 09-20-2016 10:08 AM

2006 = Borat, Pan's Labyrinth and The Descent.

It's one of Lynch's best and most realized films imo.

I'm a pretty big Lynch fan but that's one of the few movies of his I haven't seen. From what I've heard though it's not all that great, have I heard wrong?

It's difficult, but it's pretty fecking great. It's more disorienting and dreamlike than any of his films.

The Departed is a remake of the Hong Kong film Internal Affairs. Scorsese paid a great homage to it and even lifted some scenes almost note for note from it.

Really? I'll have to find time for it. Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive are among my favourite films, so I should at least give it a shot, I guess.

That's amazing! What was he like? I've always imagined him being a really interesting guy to have a conversation with.

I loved that movie. It's called Infernal Affairs though.

djchameleon 09-20-2016 11:15 AM

wait wait wait wasn't Children of Men in 2006?

That's definitely best picture of the year for me.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is awesome but that's 70s stuff.

Yeah dude I LOVED that film. The great part about it is that most of the dialogue is improvised.

Definitely his most surreal film. I love everything by Lynch obviously. Each one of his films is vastly different from another. I will admit though that I've only seen Inland Empire once though. It's the only film I don't own by Lynch.

What's everyone's favorite Michael Haneke film? I love Cache but I honestly think I'd go with Funny Games as my #1.

Tie between Funny Games and The White Ribbon.

EDIT: Make that a three way tie with The Piano Teacher.

Which one?

Also the answer is Cache. Code Unknown is a very good one too that is underseen.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 09-20-2016 01:49 PM

I wasn't too crazy about the White Ribbon my first viewing, need to give it another shot though. Love The Piano Teacher though.

EDIT - The American. I love both, but I prefer cast in the American version.
