Yes, I did go to see this in the fancy theater that only plays classy films. The one that never has any obnoxious teenagers or cringe-worthy toddlers. The one that serves alcohol and has gourmet popcorn and coffee and can afford to not show any ads. And yes I went into the theater with my ray-bans and j-crew sweater and loved this pretentious, obnoxious movie. It was great!

The Man From Hong Kong (1975)

Classic mid 70s Ozploitation. Taking advantage of Wang Yu's popularity of the time, a fairly general crime/Kung Fu movie made great by digs at Asian's ('What did you expect it to be like, acupuncture?') and an amazing look back at 70's Australia. The hair kicks arse as well. Music fairly amazing as well. Who doesn't want to see a foot race up Uluru? Or subtle segues between pigeons and hang-gliding darlings, or finding out what makes the Special Branch so special? Lazenby deserves a mention as well as always. Quite interesting watching some scenes when you learn about Wang Yu's supremely misogynistic views.

Also known as 'The Dragon Flies'

Easy 10/10 for fun factor (Watch with a few mates)

(You can watch the entire movie on youtube as well!)

I don't think Cameron has ever made a movie purely just for showcasing insane visual effects, and although I thought this would be the case with Avatar, it most definitely wasn't. Not only was it a deeply felt love story, but a commentary on human (and non-human) nature, spirituality, togetherness, and life.

And also, if you'll allow me to be girly for a brief moment, Sam Worthington is pretty fine!

So to conclude... pretty much after seeing this film I no longer want to be human nor do I want to live on Earth!
Just saw this one yesterday. My expectations weren't that high to be honest because, well .. fairies in space and a friend of mine who saw it thought it was garbage in a very nice wrapping.

The movie went well beyond my expectations though I've never seen anything quite like it, it is bloody gorgeous to behold. The action is great as well, full of suspense, exciting and entertaining. The story is a little clichè-y - it has stereotypical characters and feels a bit like a kind of space pocahontas. Still, even if it did use clichès, it did it right I felt - that's the way to do it. The sheer scale of production and the visuals means it can take a bit of cheese I think.

Not perfect, but still a brilliant film and I think I'm gonna have to take my girlfriend and watch the 3D version as well.

I felt the same way!!

I do have to say though, as easy as Sam Worthington is on the eyes, I thought his American accent was terrible.

Very unsettling and leaves a bad aftertaste, but I guess you can expect as much from a film about pedophilia. Although I have to say, I think a more talented filmmaker and journalist could have pushed the story more. As it is (and reading some things about it on line), I think its moral ambiguity is more accidental than purposeful. Anyhow, it definitely is an excellent conversation starter and leaves lots of things to ponder, if you can stomach the subject matter.

It was very terrible, I agree! But does an accent really matter in the scheme of things? I don't think so. If they wanted somebody with a perfect American accent they could have easily picked an American actor. It's silly how Australians have to constantly put on different accents for films anyway. These days we're living in a world in which everybody is culturally hybrid anyway, and I know plenty of people who have undefinable accents.

When I haven't been working on various crap for uni while trying to shake off this bloody cold, I've been watching quite a lot of films this last week. From what I can remember...

Othello (Orson Welles version)
The Third Man
Inglourious Basterds
2001
Eyes Wide Shut
Lolita
Day Of the Triffids (the BBC remake that finished earlier this evening)
The Shining
Dog Soldiers
Hot Fuzz
American Werewolf In London
Barry Lyndon

...and probably a few more. Basically a bunch of old favourites and ones I've never seen before.

Pretty good stuff actually. Historical accuracy basically goes up in smoke by the end, so it's really just a good bit of fun story-wise. There are some of the best scenes I've seen in any Tarantino movie dotted around it too.

Been holding off on watching this because it didn't look like my cup of tea, but I enjoyed it alot more that I thought I would. I thought the banter between Walt and Sue was great and I wasn't at all disappointed by the ending.
