Watched "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" last night and it was great because it was surprisingly unpredictable. Also, there was a Super Troopers 2 trailer, and I can't wait.

i went to the cinema to see this, but my flat-mate hadn't seen it before, so we sat and watched this today:
https://milnersblog.files.wordpress....-lightside.jpg
i figured we might as well as i bought this specific version when it came out on Blu-Ray.

i think we'll watch this tomorrow:
https://images.weflubit.com/c/670/46...9-original.jpg
he didn't bother going to see this either.

Episode VII is decent, but Rogue One was fantastic!

debaserr 11-28-2017 03:17 AM

Rogue One was utter garbage in my opinion. I would have left the theater if I went alone.

MicShazam 11-28-2017 06:13 AM

I also saw Rogue One in the theater with a few other people. I liked some things about it, but I can't really understand the idea that it's better than The Force Awakens (not that that one was too great), because Rogue One really feels like the story is kind of haphazardly put together. Especially in the last half. There's clearly several things missing from the script, leaving some scenes oddly unresolved. The last quarter or third of the movie is just a big, tedious Michael Bay action scene with hilariously overdramatic death scenes of minor characters. Oh no! Not big Hawaian guy! He was my favorite!

Don't get me started on those two weird looking CGI resurrected actors.

two? the only one i can think of is Peter Cushing, who died in 1994.

Carrie Fisher was still alive when Rogue One was released as it was released December 16th and Carrie died on December 27th.

But they did resurrect young Carrie Fischer - with moderately unnerving results.

Chula Vista 11-28-2017 10:26 AM

Tombstone. Still my fave western even though it borrows (steals?) so heavily from Silverado.

Mike and I can ape this scene to a T.

I play Ringo, him, Holliday.

You really need to watch the entire flick to fully appreciate this scene.

Frownland 11-28-2017 10:30 AM

Even though I do enjoy Tombstone.

Awesome movie. But I have the same problem with it as I do with "There Will Be Blood".

Characters like Plainview (nod, nod, wink, wink), and Little Bill, simply wouldn't have survived in the old west. Someone would have shot them in the back for being such dicks.

Same could be said for Holliday, but he was a bad mother****er who was insanely lethal with a gun. And also kinda charming in a weird way.

Splitting hairs here. All GREAT movies.

I respect that they don't mesh with your perception of the wild west, but you should consider whether or not your perception is just shaped by Holywood western cliches and maybe, just maybe those movies are better for shaking those cliches.

Chula Vista 11-28-2017 10:52 AM

*groan*

I do read, for what it's worth.

Frownland 11-28-2017 10:54 AM

Tombstone sucks because Doc Holliday didn't get shot in the casino when he made the cup joke. It was a dick move and dicks didn't survive in John Wayneland. And Val Kilmer's moustache is way too small.

Characterization, not my actual opinion except for the moustache part.

Chula Vista 11-28-2017 11:17 AM

Why do you have to resort to being a dismissive dick so often?

We were having a cool discourse.

Frownland 11-28-2017 11:19 AM

Just speaking your language bro. Also it's pretty funny and a good joke>>>>>>>>your feelings every time.

And no, no we were not having a cool discourse. You got upset the second I tried to bring up something that wasn't stitched into your hat.

Last night was ol' school Disney night for me (every night is potentially ol' school Disney night for me tbh) and I ended with Sleeping Beauty. I've heard that Walt Disney considered it his masterpiece, and I can see why, but if true I think it's more of a pride thing for him than a self-aware sense of accomplishment. The animation is ****ing stunning. Just watch the use of separate fore-, middle-, and background cel animation to create almost 3-dimensional perspective, even in motion. Sleeping Beauty's animation can simply put even modern Disney to shame at times.

It also tries way too hard. That opening scene is magnificent, with the level of animation, amount of moving pieces, background details and textures that are damn near photorealistic as far as 1959 is concerned, and dear god those colors are gorgeous... but you can tell that Walt is just bragging about how awesome his studio is, which can be distracting and off-putting throughout the movie, even while you're marvelling at just how good everything looks.

Everything but the characters. The character animation on many early Disney movies are very soft and inviting, but in Sleeping Beauty the linework is much more pronounced and forms shapes that remind me of the more stylized designs from Hercules. They pop right off the backgrounds, which is the point obviously, but to such an extent that they clash and almost don't seem to inhabit the space they're supposed to be in, only getting worse the more detailed the background (Forests are especially bad for this given the painstakingly detailed bark and leaf designs on the treas that is admittedly one of the best things about the movie.)

Even the story feels detached. The "heroine" does absolutely nothing of consequence beyond being a series of plot devices, the prince has a bit more development than early Disney princes generally did but he literally didn't say a word for the last third of the movie, and there really aren't any other compelling antagonists to latch onto to give the movie more emotional investment.

But of course Maleficent saves the movie from being purely self-indulgent cinema wank with a pretty paint job. She's easily the best Disney villain besides Jafar, and kinda creeped me out at times even at the age of thirty-****ing-one. Her character design is ****ing flawless as well, making her feel evil and threatening while also darkly majestic, and her voice actress only brings this home even further. And the ****ing dragon. And her ****ing castle. Beyond the animation porn this movie really is just an excuse to watch Maleficent be awesome.

I mean it's not a bad movie or anything. The fantasy element is strong and wonderful, the characters aren't the most memorable but they still carry the movie enough so that you enjoy watching them, and the excellent pacing keeps what could have been a slog moving along nicely and constantly changing. And did I mention how beautiful the animation is... usually? I'll probably keep coming back to Sleeping Beauty more for nostalgia and Maleficent than any other reason, but it's still worthwhile to come back to as a whole.

Never seen this movie. Now I kind of want to. The only Disney movie I still own is Alice in Wonderland, which I guess means it's my favorite of the one's I've seen.

I actually watched Alice in Wonderland to start last night off. Loved the weirdness and Alice's adventurousness, but I mean the movie has no plot or character arc so it's kind of hard to watch as anything but a visual spectacle, but dear god I want to smoke some serious weed and watch that movie.

And with whatever I said about Sleeping Beauty, there are very, very few Disney movies I'd ever say you could miss, and basically none I'd say you shouldn't watch. And Sleeping Beauty is in the low part of those movies you definitely should watch. I guess it's just cause you're European that you've never seen it, cause it's honestly weird to me that you haven't seen it, but the villain is one of the best in all of cinema and you should absolutely watch it if only for her. And even otherwise it's a fascinating visual movie. But otherwise it is just kind of another Disney movie, but even that is a recomendation, cause... ****ing Disney.

I mean yeah, cause Aladdin is amazing, but Disney in general is eminently watchable and everyone should watch the vast majority of Disney movies. And let's not forget that any early 90s kid probably discovered women through Jasmine.

As far as I remember, it was mainly the visuals and the fun, snappy dialogue that I loved about Alice in Wonderland, plus some of the songs are good. I just found the movie strangely mesmerizing to watch.

Disney movies are huge over here too, but I've never gone out of my way to watch those from before my time. I'm most familiar with the 90's output, and maybe late 80's. It's pretty spotty what I have and haven't watched from before then.

The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Mulan... those are the ones I'm sure that I've watched multiple times.

You really should make time for early Disney. A lot of it is kind of dated, especially for its portrayal of female antagonists, but... I don't know... it's ****ing Disney. It's just the best **** ever. At the very least you need to see Cinderella and 101 Dalmations.

But yeah the 90s **** will always stick with me the most. Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Pocahontas, and Hercules will always be heavy hitters in my favorite movies of all-time no matter how old I get, but especially since I was the perfect age. But the old movies, while dated, most definitely have their worth in spades if you give them the chance.

Definitely want to see Cinderella. Those based on fairy tales are especially interesting to me. Plus, I like that scene where the birds and mice make the dress. If you don't have that same Disney Christmas special on TV as we get every year in Denmark, then it's kind of hard to explain. But I've basically seen that scene almost every year for 30+ years, but never seen the full movie.

I like the look of old Disney movies a lot. The music too. Maybe I can squeeze a few in during December.

Seems like the worst idea ever. Part of me wants to say that. Just doesn't seem right to not have it be animated. The only re-imagining I'd like to see would be with stop motion puppets.

Bro, Cinderella is the ****. The evil stepmother is definitely one of the best Disney villains ever. I hate to invoke the word "classic" like Chula, but there's a reason it's considered one, and it's rightfully a classic even today. If you don't love Cinderella the character and want the best for her then you're a dead soul.
