...oh yeah, the movie. Well, it wasn't your ordinary Clint Flick. Can't really say much else without explaining the plot and possibly ruining it for someone who wants to go see it. I'll just leave it at that.

Did you like it?

Spoiler for not really a spoiler, but I don't want to give anything away and keep it organic for anyone else wanting to see it:
Not really. For as old and spent as Clint is, he did a decent job, but it really relied on some cliche'ed aspects of things I can't say without ruining it. It seemed more of a send-off for Clint as an artist and his medium.

Bird Box

Absolutely garbage dialogue but it had some interesting ideas and really thrilling and suspenseful scenes. Some cheesy moments too but overall it was gouda and a pretty fun watch. 3/5

Spoiler for .:
Someone link me a fan theory that the ending was actually them seeing the monster because that **** was stupid.

Watched through the "recobbled" cut of the Thief and the Cobbler on YouTube. An amazing work of art, really. It's like visual chocolate, no matter how unfinished it might be.

Christmas/New Years is a great time to catch up on films. Back on my war film streak. Two good ones:

"Der Hauptmann" aka "The Captain" aka "Bödeln från Emsland". Great film, really well edited. The use of Black and White just seemed to make it much more stronger, sharper, and memorable. True story about Willy Paul "Willi" Herold[citation needed], also known as "the Executioner of Emsland", a German soldier who at the end of World War II pretended to be a Luftwaffe captain and embarked on the murder of inmates at prison camps.

Another good one:

A running documentary about WWI. Jackson's studio restored the footage beautifully. The footage looks so crisp.

Zhanteimi 12-29-2018 02:26 AM

We watched The Godfather last night. It's a Christmas break tradition.

Roma

The hype is somewhat validated, but I'm more proud to see that this Mexican film by one of our great Mexican directors is in serious discussion for a Best Picture win. A Spanish film winning best picture would be incredible representation for us beans.

What about him? He's great too, Shape Of Water was really good. But an actual film with just a few lines of English dialogue to perhaps win the biggest award would be bittersweet.

Frownland 12-29-2018 05:28 PM

He's a director from Mexico and they released the movie with a Spanish dub so same thing basically.

Finally got around to fully watching Interstellar.

It's an awesome movie, but I was way too stoned the first time I tried to watch it. Also, they don't even get into space for the first 42 minutes of the movie (it's damn near 3 hours long). It was good, I liked it, but it honestly took much too long.

While I'm at it, does anybody else have movies about/with black holes in them? I've already got The Black Hole and Event Horizon.

Took my son to see AquaMan at the theater.

Keep forgetting to post about The Favourite.

The first of Yorgos Lanthinmos' films which he didn't write himself, the roots of the original screenplay by Deborah Davis date back to the early 1990's. As with most films (and especially Lanthimos') I prefer to go in blind, so all I really knew to expect was Olivia Colman as Queen Anne. Ho-ly shit what a ride! I loooooove Olivia Colman in everything she does but my lord was she fan-fucking-tastic. Rachel Weisz as Sarah Churchill was a standout, so sharp and steely - always steps ahead. Emma Stone was great too, calculating and... ambitious? The three of them together was just *MUAH* great chemistry and so much depth to their relationships. Strong, dynamically written characters, you can never quite decide who to root for.

It was so different from other Lanthimos films, but still contained all the trademark bluntness, the instantaneous switch between absurdist comedy and raw, uncomfortable human experience, the stunning sets and cinematography. So, so good. Can't wait to watch it again.

I'll give anything with Emma Stone a chance. Outside of obviously trashy rom-coms at least.

WWWP 01-01-2019 02:15 PM

She was exceptionally good AND she shows her titties

MicShazam 01-01-2019 02:17 PM

I don't see any reason not to watch it as soon as possible.

Dude111 01-01-2019 04:17 PM

I last saw THE DREAM TEAM (1989) on VHS :)

So you like trashy romantic comedies?

The Batlord 01-02-2019 10:01 AM

****. Yes. Pretty Woman, Enchanted, Only You, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, America's Sweethearts, all my absolute ****ing ****.

MicShazam 01-02-2019 10:21 AM

When Harry Met Sally was good. Might have seen a few others that I didn't mind, but it's not a genre that I've much luck with.

The Batlord 01-02-2019 03:54 PM

I mean if you're trying to dissect rom coms then you're doing it wrong. Even the good ones are still the pop singles of film. You just take it in and chillax.

MicShazam 01-02-2019 11:42 PM

I don't think I'm overthinking movies in general tbh. I like plenty of dumb movies and I'm not of the ignorant opinion that romance is for women (it takes two to tango).

And I just realized that it's not When Harry Met Sally that I meant to say was good. It was French Kiss. They're both with Meg Ryan, so I got them mixed up.

And it's not quite a rom-com, but another chick flick that I like is The Devil Wears Prada.

I'm just picky about movies in general.

Zhanteimi 01-02-2019 11:49 PM

You don't sound picky.

MicShazam 01-02-2019 11:55 PM

Name a movie and there's a GREAT chance that I don't like it.

Zhanteimi 01-02-2019 11:58 PM

The original 1973 The Wicker Man.

MicShazam 01-03-2019 12:00 AM

Haven't seen it because I generally hate horror movies. But I know that scene with the bees from the Nick Cage remake and it's funny. So that's something. I bet there's nothing funny about the original.

Zhanteimi 01-03-2019 12:01 AM

Do yourself a favor. And don't read anything about the film. Just watch it.

And then listen to the soundtrack.

MicShazam 01-03-2019 12:36 AM

I know the plot though. Pretty famous movie.

Zhanteimi 01-03-2019 12:39 AM

I pity you.

MicShazam 01-03-2019 12:42 AM

Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. I'm practically drowning in movies I have to see.

MicShazam 01-03-2019 12:39 PM

Ok now that's one movie I intend to avoid at all cost.

Zhanteimi 01-03-2019 06:11 PM

That looks terrible.

[MERIT] 01-03-2019 06:28 PM

It actually wasn't that bad. Charlize Theron is hot as hell. I hate Sarah Silverman [unless she's on mute], but the supporting cast of Giovanni Ribisi, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris and Amand Seyfried were actually pretty good.
